Surprised Yang never use "Hia" to call Tian since they are of Chinese descent.. and how they use "chao ka" as…
One of the commenters said it could be because they were raised by Bua who is Thai, also Yang's mom is also Thai. But, I still find it really strange

I'm in the middle of episode six, but I need to just need to say something about Tham. I. HATE. THAM. I'm yet to finish, so please don't spoil, but wow, this man is scary in the stalker abuser type. Let Nuch finish her time with That and move on, Tham is just becoming increasingly annoying for me to handle, yoh! I love this show, but Tham is disgusting, no matter how hot he is when he's in front of the mirror in the bathroom or having just exited the shower, it doesn't make up for his lackluster and inappropriate behaviour

I think ep 15 really cleared up for us, who is greedy and who isn't, the greedy one said it with her mouth....

Nígbà tí Jiu wá láti gba Tian là, mi ò tilẹ̀ mí, mo kú, mo jí, mo dẹ̀ kú lẹ́ẹ̀kan sí i, mo sì jí lẹ́ẹ̀kan sí i. Eré yìí pọ̀, ó pọ̀ ooo 😭ep 15 àwàdà kọ́ nìyẹn, bí ọkàn mi ṣe ń lù kìkì kìkì, olúwa ẹ gbà mí ooo 😭

Thank you I think this is a fantastic analysis. This drama is fantastic but I think it definitely went wrong with…
I strongly agree, greed simply isn't the right word. The era matters, in addition to his mum's crazily unhealthy love for him. She doesn't want Tian to be a social outcast, she has said this several times to his face, she doesn't want Tian to live a life of suffering, she doesn't want Tian to kill himself in the way Zhang did. Honestly, for me the word is fear. Remember when she saw Jiu and Tian naked? That was a face of sheer fear, nothing else, for the future (through her mindset) of Tian.

Sometimes I feel like some of the audience of the show forget that there is a complexity that make these characters…
I didn't watch ep 13 when I wrote my original post, but now that I have, I can even more firmly say that Mae Li is doing this solely to protect Tian. When Jia told her that Yang knew, she was freaking out!!! She doesn't even know what to do other than kill people out of fear. Everything is linked to the fact that Tian being gay means that he is ostracized from their community. Even the same with Chan, when she was contemplating killing Chan, it was because she was becoming to nosey and they're worried that she'll know too. If this was greed, why hasn't she killed Yang when he was a baby!?!? What Mae Li saw in Yang was a genuine boy/young man that loved his brother, but now that he knows the secret, she's scared he'll expose her son. This is just the reality of the show, just to stress the setting, we're in 1943 Japanese occupied Thailand within a very conservative Chinese community. I still fail to see how greed in particular has shaped Mae Li's actions. If you were talking about Chan, then yes. Since Tian was a kid with the snake, and even all of the later failed attempts to kill Tian, every single one from Chan is due to greed uniquely. Even the sole reason for her to seek out the secret is pure and utter greed.

After Episode 13 I'm more hooked on this series, my god, it is so good! 🤯
I just watched ep 13 now now, and wow. I don't even know what to say. I don't even think I'm here for the BL anymore, just the pure drama. This episode is so riveting yoh, just amazing

Very much this!!! If this was truly about greed, why hasn't she killed Yang already? What about Chan? It's solely to guard Tian's sexuality from the public.

should I watch this or not? does this have female lirking around ML or it is family war and boys love with no…
Almost exclusively the latter, with a hint of the former, but not overwhelming. You'll really enjoy this show it's amazing!

Yeah, no redemption. Especially after Mor Qi 😭

I see your point of view, but I genuinely don't believe greed is at the bottom of her choices, nor status. I think it imperative to keep the era in mind when talking about the show, if this was today, I would say greed, but it isn't. Anywhere in the world in this time period, Tian would have been an outcast the second he came out, and Mae Li knows this. In private with Jia, as well as with Tian she has said this upfront. As for status, she isn't doing it for status! In the drugging of Tian and attempted drugging of Pin, that was again, a sinister manifestation of her fear, her fear of Tian loving men and what that would mean for his future. Her first attempt, though not with drugs, was when she allowed Mud, on two occasions, to attempt to sleep with Tian. Moreover, we know this because she literally said that she would kill herself for Tian, no matter how messed up this is, no matter how much she squabbles with Chan, no matter how much she lies to Sua Song, she will protect Tian, albeit in her own horrifically messed up way. She knows that she's expending so much social capital for this, look at her relationship with Mr. Song, in tatters. As for Tian, he has alluded to wanting to kill himself more than once in the show because of his reality of being gay and the detrimental effect it would have to the Song family within the association. When looking at Zhang, I think he serves as a marker for where people stand with homosexuality in the Song family, and since that is all everyone has to go off of, all we can assume right now, and more importantly all Mae Li can assume right now is that Sua Song will react in the same manner. Or why was it she was so inquisitive at the temple? In her eyes, her son won't be seen as human the moment he comes out, and all Sua Song did was confirm it. It is definitely possible that he reacts differently to Tian, but in all reality that's how it stands as of now.

Overall, I don't see myself as justifying Mae Li, but more seeing the reason behind why she does what she does. Reducing it to greed and/or status negates the raw emotion we've seen from her throughout the show because of Tian's sexuality. As I stated earlier, she and Jia are demons and the devil reincarnated, they, as you said, are most definitely villains, but the why is much more nuanced and deep than greed.

I've been reading the comments here everyday ('cause I'm waiting for the English subs 😅), but one thing that has come to my attention is the hatred towards Mae Li. I strongly think we need to put her setting and perspective into focus. We are in a 1943 Thailand under Japanese occupation, entering the lives of a conservative Chinese community, what are we going to expect the mother to do, sit around and wait until her son kills himself!?!? Every opportunity she has had to ask Sua Song about Zhang, he always strongly affirms that he would have done NOTHING different, and Zhang his closet buddy, that came with him from China, killed himself in front of his entire family, AND MR. SONG WON'T CHANGE A THING. Keep that in mind whilst you watch, it for sure has been in my mind. (I've only watched to ep 12, and maybe Mr. Song changes his mind when Tian comes out, but he sure hasn't yet) Now onto another aspect of the comments I've seen here, lots of people here are saying she's doing it due to greed, but may I ask, what greed??? She's set for life, even when Mr. Song dies, and even if Yang or Mr. Ma take the helm she will never be poor. Or is it not a fact that she basically owned Pin's gigantic mansion??? Even, irrespective of the mansion, she could comfortably live off of Mr. Song's wealth. Now, let's look at Tian, a gay man in this era, he could easily be cut off from this wealth for life if/when he comes out. Mae Li knows this and has openly said this several times throughout the show, she knows that he'll be a societal pariah due to his sexuality. From his youth, her only goal has been to protect Tian in any way possible, even whipping the young boy, something she never did before the scene of young Tian cosplaying as Bai Suzhen. Mae Li in my eyes, is a woman scared, deeply so, due to the outcome of Tian coming out and what it will mean for him. I even think she hinted that Tian could have a side affair after he married a woman and had kids, but Tian said that could never do such a thing. I will agree that Mae Li has become the devil reincarnated due to what she has done. But, based on her circumstances there really isn't much she can do. Tian is at the age to get married and hasn't had a single female partner, people have already caught onto that, Mae Li is seriously scared. You guys remember the face she made when she saw Tian and Jiu naked, to me that wasn't disgust, that was a face of pure fear, utter fear. This is a mother deeply worried for her son, in an unhealthy way, but deeply worried. Furthermore, she knows what's at stake. Let's all remember the scene of Sua Song dreaming of Tian's death.... I really hope that wasn't foreshadowing, but honestly Mae Li is dreaming that every breathing second. I'll touch on Jia just a little bit. Jia is literally Tian's third mother (after Mae Bua and Mae Li), she has watched him grow up, she has wept for him, she has put her life on the line for him, and what's more is that I don't think Tian really appreciates or even really knows how much of an impact Jia has had on his life. My mind goes to the time when she was crying when Mae Li was whipping Tian. Jia has suffered, and now even Mor Qi is dead. This woman, though wicked, is not recklessly wicked nor evil, the only people who honestly get that award are Chan and her maid. Anyway, let's not forget the true nature of this drama, nor the deeper reasons as to why characters are doing what they are doing. Let's look past the surface level tension and look for the deep strings that tie scenes and stories together, of which there are many. Mae Li has turned herself into a demon, as well as Jia, but not for no reason. She is a mother worried about her child's future, in an unforgiving era.

Episode 10 was a turning point for me, it was the first time in the series I sided with Chan and her maid. Madame Li has just become the living devil, it's too much.

Yang’s wardrobe most of the time definitely looks too modern to me too lol especially his jackets. It’s not…
But the thing is, is that jackets from the 40s had zippers too 😅Button only jackets were common too
