The deadly terror that led them to their demise one by one, which was shown throughout the movie, was illusions. Those soldiers might be getting into a loop as they didn't realize that they were already died. Perhaps their great desire to return homeland made them deny the reality. They became the wandering ghosts in a foreign land. Spooky yet sad at the same time.
