notes to self (not a comment, basically a rant): - plot circumstances make for a very angsty romance, loved it. their love story is one for the books <3 lots of action too. love a couple where both can kick ass. - wanted to see some connection between metal crafting and the murders or how hyunsoo still chose it as a career path even though it would most likely pain him every time he's reminded of who taught him those skills, rather than how that career is turned out to be more like an aesthetic in the end and that's it. - expected to see an actual psychopath for a protag, but got a sweet pitiful man instead. not bad, because that's how much i love junki. - expected more of hyunsoo's past, with his father specifically, but ended up getting only a few brief scenes and mentions, when the person to supposedly have made the hyunsoo we know is his father. - how did they come to a conclusion that father committed suicide when baek heeseong literally hit his head with a rock several times? - wish they showed the reason why killers chose to kill their victims with methods like that. - i need to know what hyunsoo did to that rabbit(?)! he's not gonna kill it for sure, so i wanted to see him pet it or set it free. that'd have been very endearing and in-character of him TvT - most bizarre plot device goes to: son accidentally ran do hyunsoo over by a car, tried to bury him alive but mother stopped him by stabbing him with a sleazy knife but that was enough to get him into a coma for 10+ years, knowing fully who do hyunsoo is, parents still take him in and give him their son's identity instead of. like, idk, rid of heeseong's murder trophies and take hyunsoo to your regular hospital?

it's really heartbreaking but heartwarming at the same time, see and learn alongside mr. taxi driver about what's going on in gwangju in the 80s. loved how everything played out in this movie, even though it's based on real events, i didn't get bored at all.

major things to complain: the policewoman can get very out of character for plot conveniences (she's obviously portrayed as smart but she gets very dumb in some of the most critical moments), villain is pathetic (that's technically his character though lol) and not quite charismatic enough to scare me through-out, plot progression could get jumpy at times, and the drama lacks suspense as almost all things are just dished out to viewers and only the main characters are in the clueless side.
overall i enjoyed it lots! we need more dongsiks in our life! (please recommend me dramas with similar protagonist!)

entertainment value is a solid 10 on this one :D what a cast! i particularly fell in love with mr. detective, the fugitive/ assassin, and mr. painter both acting wise and character-wise; they are all fantastic in what they do— under yi chae's control.
i get that this drama doesn't address mental health problems, like, at all. but from the beginning, to me death is never a good-natured character. death is closer to the devil here, putting ML through hell and back for a reason as simple as referring to death as a means. so i don't hold every word spouted from death's mouth to heart. having that in mind, i don't really care about the message this drama gives. what i cared about was the thrilling journey to find out all the lives yi chae was given point to a bigger picture, how yi chae brought the baddies and the psycho dude down, how he was able to find his own life lessons to his own problems— which of course cannot be applied to every suicidal cases out there in the real world.

- plot circumstances make for a very angsty romance, loved it. their love story is one for the books <3 lots of action too. love a couple where both can kick ass.
- wanted to see some connection between metal crafting and the murders or how hyunsoo still chose it as a career path even though it would most likely pain him every time he's reminded of who taught him those skills, rather than how that career is turned out to be more like an aesthetic in the end and that's it.
- expected to see an actual psychopath for a protag, but got a sweet pitiful man instead. not bad, because that's how much i love junki.
- expected more of hyunsoo's past, with his father specifically, but ended up getting only a few brief scenes and mentions, when the person to supposedly have made the hyunsoo we know is his father.
- how did they come to a conclusion that father committed suicide when baek heeseong literally hit his head with a rock several times?
- wish they showed the reason why killers chose to kill their victims with methods like that.
- i need to know what hyunsoo did to that rabbit(?)! he's not gonna kill it for sure, so i wanted to see him pet it or set it free. that'd have been very endearing and in-character of him TvT
- most bizarre plot device goes to: son accidentally ran do hyunsoo over by a car, tried to bury him alive but mother stopped him by stabbing him with a sleazy knife but that was enough to get him into a coma for 10+ years, knowing fully who do hyunsoo is, parents still take him in and give him their son's identity instead of. like, idk, rid of heeseong's murder trophies and take hyunsoo to your regular hospital?

overall a pretty good drama! reply is moments i'd love to watch again when i revisit this show!
i learned a lot about how korean police worked in the earlier days of 'military dictatorship'. the last scene was impactful for i think the movie's message is to warn us about how deceiving normalcy can get.

major things to complain: the policewoman can get very out of character for plot conveniences (she's obviously portrayed as smart but she gets very dumb in some of the most critical moments), villain is pathetic (that's technically his character though lol) and not quite charismatic enough to scare me through-out, plot progression could get jumpy at times, and the drama lacks suspense as almost all things are just dished out to viewers and only the main characters are in the clueless side.
overall i enjoyed it lots! we need more dongsiks in our life! (please recommend me dramas with similar protagonist!)

i get that this drama doesn't address mental health problems, like, at all. but from the beginning, to me death is never a good-natured character. death is closer to the devil here, putting ML through hell and back for a reason as simple as referring to death as a means. so i don't hold every word spouted from death's mouth to heart. having that in mind, i don't really care about the message this drama gives. what i cared about was the thrilling journey to find out all the lives yi chae was given point to a bigger picture, how yi chae brought the baddies and the psycho dude down, how he was able to find his own life lessons to his own problems— which of course cannot be applied to every suicidal cases out there in the real world.
