it's a good choice! it's def a romance that leans into melo but has many interesting aspects like the north korean setting, some action/military elements and enough comedy. arthdal is a serious fantasy with heavy worldbuilding, think of something like GOT

tropes are essential but if theyre handled badly can easily turn into cliches and drag the story down. all cliches are tropes but not all tropes have to be cliche. i think most people just really dont know the difference between the two :p but its a bit much to expect that from this website lol

so true honestly, to me cha dal geon's "unstoppable force" type of behaviour in this show wasn't a bug but a feature and it adds such charm to the story lol. like you just can't help but root for him. i am convinced that this guy, in his several near death experiences, has seen the face of god and then fought god with his bare hands to make sure he survives. i dont need all action thrillers to be uber serious and realistic and a show like this being so high adrenaline but at the same time never tedious in its "grittiness" is a nice change of pace!

"based on some panicky comments" way to just assume things lol??? i am literally seeing clips and snippets from the show itself & have since it has started and building my opinion based on those. i'm secure enough in my taste in dramas to know when a show isn't for me after having seen a sufficient amount of spoilers.

for how well written people have said this to be, dont the recent events feel like such a strange pivot in quality?? maybe the writer didnt expect this to get such high ratings (largely thanks to KSH & KJW), and since the show had such an enourmous budget she threw in some of the classic tropes to keep it interesting and secure the viewership. at least that's how i could imagine it as someone who hasn't seen the show. but then again, she's got a track record of hit shows and with cloy's (only show i've seen from her) last stretch of episodes being no where near as messy and chaotic this seems super strange. curious what other ppl think!
