I kinda agree, it's hard to get invested in the story and the characters, even if I liked the criticism towards…
Except they don't? They start off with an obvious trope but then show how it can not be so problematic. Like, Kao is pushy but he doesn't sexually harass Gene--(corner him in the shower, kiss him when he's asleep, etc etc). They have the classic drunk scene but instead of ending how it usually does, they changed it to how it can be a moment of truth but doesn't mean to be a drunken moment where one party takes advantage of the other. There's the fact that they criticize the lack of hiring of openly gay actors as leads but then like the guy playing Aey IS openly gay in real life. The last episode had what seemed like a lot of product placement but showed us virtually none of the products except the tooth brush? I could go on but etc etc
China too... I mean word of honor , untamed, immortality and countless other BLs coming out this year and next…
Those aren't based on a gay novel. The Untamed IS based on a BL novel and the source material is such. I think anything that is based on something gay and is slightly altered to make it pass censors is gay. Especially when NO other romantic interest is ever introduced.
You can't say that about Captain America or Supernatural. And at the end of the day Supernatural did make it canon if I recall correctly but I only tangently pay attention to that fandom.
Anyway. I'm an old gay so the experience of having to see gay romances censored is nothing new.

I disagree. If the context of the story establishes that they are life partners, soulmates and others around them insinuate that something about the relationship is out of the norm, then it is not a bromance. To me saying those shows are bromances actually does a disservice because they are surviving as gay relationships in a very hostile environment and that should be commended.
My thought: what if what we're seeing is the Hin's BL novel stuff (what was it, 'Editor in Love'?!), hence that…
I don't think you can say that the noodles, cream, and breath spray were product placement. I couldn't tell you the brand of any of those things because at no point in time did they zoom in on the brand. It's almost like this is supposed to be some other point but I'm not sure? But they definitely aren't product placements. The toothbrush probably was because I did see the zoom in on the name in the beginning but nothing else actually had a freeze frame.
Episode 4 was so good. I was hoping that Nubsib wouldn't take advantage of Gene when Gene was drunk. I'm so happy…
I'm thinking that the whole point of this show is that the director wants to basically say that this is what BL could be and that it could still be just as enjoyable without all the super problematic tropes. So while each preview gives us something that makes us all GO UGH not again, it always turns out to be something else.
Funny, I can't stand Gene - I actually loathe him. I have no idea why someone like Sib would be into a rude grump…
I guess he's sort of sleazy in that he clearly has his own car and probably does not need a place to stay and just used that as an excuse to get close to Gene. And verdict is still out on whether that plushy thing he put in the closet is inappropriate or not. He's also definitely two-faced. The way he acts with his manager and Aey is completely different than the way he acts with Gene.
I actually love both of them though and think they are just flawed characters.
So, no follow up on the hurtful outburst from the end of last week's episode and toilet bowl humour, complete…
Was this whole episode NOT a follow up? And that outburst wasn't that much tbh. But they mentioned several times that the end of the month was nearing. The end scene of Gene forcefully asking why do you want to stay here so bad was the conclusion of that ark imho.
You realize that now you sound exactly like Gene's editor right? And that whole debate Gene was having with her? Just because there was already a kiss scene doesn't mean there needs to be a kiss scene in every episode just for the sake of there being a kiss scene and it's okay for characters to develop to be fully fleshed out people.
Gene is going through the process of coming out. People go through that in different ways depending on their upbringing.…
There are plenty of people just like Gene who are in complete denial about himself. Like there are many gay porn stars even who say they are not gay and are homophobic. Gene is pretty tame and pretty realistic imho in comparison. I know gay women that write straight romances. I know straight women who write gay romances.
I think Gene knows he's gay in the theoretical sense but it seems like it's not something that he's every really thought about acting on and now that there's someone hitting on him, he's taken off guard and has to get out of his bubble and it's a little terrifying for him.
People keeping dropping the year is if there isn't still massive homophobic--including the internalized kind.
When I read comments here about the last scene of episode 3, I was nervous to watch it. Honestly, I felt it fit perfectly and we could see it coming as the episode progressed. This was such a good episode and this show keeps getting better and better. I think Kao is becoming better too because it's obvious that Sib was acting over the top in a certain way in order to be the perfect boyfriend material for Gene but it's not his complete personality.
I REALLY want to know what the history is with Aey and Sib. There's something there that isn't just about Gene but can't put my finger on it. Aey seems nice enough or is that an act too?
