I have a stash of Chinese snacks here as well - dried peking duck, squid strips, duck neck. Haha. And today I made mantou buns to have with leftover braised pork knuckles - all influenced by these dramas!

I have seen both cherry blossoms in Japan and plum blossoms in Taiwan. While both are very pretty, plum blossoms are more vibrant in color, and certainly more fragrant. And the fact that they grow in winter is so symbolic of strength and perseverance in the face of adversity.
P.S. When you do find osmanthus cake, let me know how they are! From recipes I have seen they seem to be like Japanese mochi, or the Filipino buchi, with a sweet filling. Curious to know how osmanthus tastes.

Filipino telenovelas tend to go over 70 episodes too. That's why I never picked up on them, except for the new ones that now come out in Netflix or Prime, formatted like Korean and Chinese dramas.
I once tried a Turkish drama. It had so many things happening, I gave up on ep 20 something when I thought it was nearing its end with the plot concluding, but another trope (the amnesia trope) was introduced! I don't have that much commitment.

Coming from Hidden Love, I expected The First Frost to have the same warmth—especially with Sang Yan’s familiar charm tying the two worlds together—but it turned out heavier and more angsty than I thought.
I still rated it around 8.5/10, mostly because of Bai Jing Ting’s strong performance and his character’s quiet, enduring love. But I wish Wen Yi Fan’s trauma had been portrayed with more empowerment. I mean, how many times can she be sexually harassed by different men in different situations? It also wasn’t clear if she was raped or molested—which would have made her struggle and healing journey feel different.
For me, running away isn’t healing—it’s avoidance. I wanted to see her face her pain and reclaim her power. Beautifully acted, yes, but it could have hit deeper with a more empowered Yi Fan.

I sort of gathered this info from ZiShang as she was noting why Ziyu is the obvious heir to the Sword Wielder title. Shang Jue is the oldest male but was not present at the time the Sword Wielder died. Yuan Zhi is only 19yo and not old enough to inherit the role. And she obviously was female and is not allowed to hold the role, but by how people addresssed her, Eldest Young Miss, she seems to be the oldest amongst the cousins.
Can someone help me out with the Gong family tree or structure? 😅 I thought at first that Ziyu was siblings…

These are the four main lineages - Yu. Jue, Zhi. Shang. Huanyu was adopted by Gong Hongyu, the former Sword Wielder. The biological son of Gong Honyu is Ziyu, our ML. Shang Jue is from the Jue lineage and took under his wing Yuan Zhi, his cousin, to train him, and treated him like his little brother when his real brother died. Funny Gong Zishang is also a cousin; her dad seems like the only living parental generation amongst the cousins of that generation, but he is sickly.
Like you, I can't seem to find a clear understanding of the clan from the Back Hill. But they seem to be allied or support clans that live outside of the main Gong residence but are under the protection and rules of the family, and serve a purpose for the Gong family - probably clans taken by force, or clans that sought protection from the Gongs. They are the Huas, the Yues, the Xues.
But what the show clearly shares is that the Gong Family seems to have been founded on brothers or siblings Yue, Jue, Shang, and Zhi.
Another observation - the Elders come from the "outside" clans, do they not? Elder Hua, Elder Xue, Elder Yue. None from the actual lineage of the main cousins. Which, for the life of me, I cannot fathom for what reason.
I liked it. it's got the same flirty vibe of Fake It, in a nice location (Macau). and if you liked the ML in Fske It, you'll love him more in Begin Again.

i was low-key rooting for the 2nd couple too. And Shangguan's whispered revelation in the end really calls for season 2.
