Jeremy definitely overshadow Allen in this drama he is such an amazing actor, and it shows in his face expressions…
Ohh you are the kind of person who deemed theatrical acting as good acting. Theatrical acting supposed to be done on stage and not in the small screen. In small screen, you supposed to act natural like normal person would in real life. You dont move your every facial muscle, did wide eyes acting or move your eyebrow every sec to show how you are feeling. Normal people do not behave that way.
'Natural acting' would be like watching real people interact in real life. Take example of veteran actor such as Chao Daoming or Wu Geng, you dont see them acting surprised with a wide-eye acting like Jeremy did in this drama. Or talking animatedly (2nd ep with FL in the carriage) since his character is not bubbly like the FL. You dont see good actors do that. He supposed to be more natural since what he's doing right now, I call that overacting. Subtle acting is what good actors do, subtlety show the audiences what they supposed to feel. I wont use it as an insult but rather skills. For an example, it would be what Mark Chao did as Mo Yuan, stoic but has enough change of expressions to tell you what he's thinking or feeling inside. As opposed to Ye Hua which is more expressive as a character.
Bland acting is different. Bland acting is not showing any emotion that you could literally replace the actor with a cardboard cut-out like what Hu Yitian did in Blossom in Adversity. Or you could argue, Yang Yang in all his cold roles.
When actors being given a cold character, they supposed to act cold and not be so expressive. If they become so expressive, then the fail the task given by the scriptwriter to them. They supposed to act cold, but have change of expression subtly in private or in a split second to show what they supposed to feel which Yang Mi failed to do in Fox Spirit.
So yeah, I think we have different take on what good acting is. Which is cool since everyone is different anyway.
I dont know what do you mean by ML can be his natural self because Allen Ren is bubbly and very talkative irl. His characters in Twilight is more towards his natural self.

I watched Jeremy in this drama, this is my first time and I find him overact a lot. He always using this wide-eye acting and compared to more natural acting by Allen Ren, Li Landi & the rest of the supporting casts, he comes out like a sore thumb.
So while reading your comment, is it like one time thing or he only acts bad in this drama? Or he used to look good among not very good actors but doesnt anymore among more skilled actors?
He knew that Shi Xing didnt kill him because of that. He just said that to comfort the people before their journey…
Boasting means 'exhibiting or characterized by excessive pride or self-satisfaction.'
Which didnt apply in his case because all the people of Shenyin know how heartbroken he is for being so weak against the enemies that he cant even protect his loved ones.

Yes, I perfectly know that. My reply is to support SyrenaBlue that he didnt keep boasting about Shi Xing didnt kill him. Its only 1 sentence as a reassurance to the people of Shenyin. It was never meant as a boast but as a reassurance. To interpret it as boastful is a serious case of failing to understand the context of the scene. I thought it was very obvious since the whole episode is him feeling sad that how he can make it big when he is also struggle to kill Shi Xing.
I love this drama. The layers and thoughts put on the script is pretty amazing. Allen Ren's solid acting as usual did not disappoint (all the characters he play in this drama has very distinct personalities) and despite the comments I usually read about Angelababy's acting, she is pretty good here. Would definitely make a rewatch in the future.
Many Cdramas do not have kissing scenes even when main characters are husband and wife. The recent ones like Legend of Anle also has zero kissing scenes despite both Dilraba & GongJun did not have any 'no kissing clause' in their contract.
If you want to see kissing scenes from Allen Ren, you can watch his dramas Forever & Ever and Blue Whisper from last years. He no longer have them since he has taken them again recently.
And this drama is not romance centered at all so do not come here expecting to see one. Its more slice of life and the script is amazing. Its one of my favorite from this year.
This is the first drama that I watched from Allen Ren and it made me a huge fan. I like how he play this naive merman that you feel the urge to protect him since (he is so innocent and clueless?) to the strong North Abyss leader that is feared by everyone. The contrast in the portrayal is just amazing. A++ solid acting.
And I think this is probably Dilireba's better acting performance from her dramas. I like how strong is her characters which is the opposite of her normal innocent roles and I like her the best when she acting in this kind of role (I also happen to like her flirty role in Legend of Anle). I also like it how she keep smiling in here despite being so weak which put layers to the character she is playing. I dont know why people dislike her I dont have problem watching her dramas at all since she is pretty and likable and it shows on screen.
The whole story is great, like really great. I certainly enjoy it a lot especially the 2nd part of the drama. And I also like it that the supporting characters are interesting particularly the Blue Bird Lady. I cried when she finally reunited with her lover lol. And how her life is a mirror to ML's struggle so she understood him the most and give him particularly a good advise.
Overall, I think the whole cast did a great job. Its an S+ production and it shows both in the CGI and script as well of acting performance of the casts.
Amazing amazing script! I am shocked to find how full of depth is this drama. Wasnt expecting it despite I know Allen Ren always chose good projects to act in. I personally wasn't expecting the sensitivity and substance that the characters' possessed.
And Allen and Angelababy has amazing chemistry. It wasnt the type where you want them to make out but they gave off the vibe of a soulmate, like a happy married couple relationship. It is very healing. They're just so sweet to each other! I love this mature kind of romance. 9/10 so far. And we still didnt know her big secret yet.
