Correct. And I guess that's exactly the point (of the OP). There is hardly anything new in the world and maybe that's ok and nothing to complain about... All the "new" ways that I can think of, have somehow somewhere been done already.

How could the gay character in every Asian (non BL) drama possibly find a happy relationship? After all, he is the only gay boy in the whole wide world :-D
Some things are just unheard of... Like, back in the day when I started watching Kdramas, I believed that there actually was a possibility that the girl would end up with the second lead. Now I know better.

Open relationships might be a bit extreme :-D But I'd already be happy to see a couple that is confident in their relationship and trusting e/o, so they don't have to chain e/o to the radiator in the basement to prevent contact with other human beings (= potential love rivals). I tried to think of BLs that have the talking / trusting component and not a lot come to mind...
Can anyone who's complaining that this setup has nothing new please elaborate? Is it because you know who will…
Your question got me thinking about how a BL could be "new"... given that they are essentially love stories and the plot will always be somewhat along the lines of "Boy 1 meets Boy 2".
Commonly the "new" element is, that the circumstances of "Boy 1 meets Boy 2" are "special". E.g. the Boys are reincarnations of a couple from several decades ago (Until we meet again). Or Boy 2 is a ghost (He's Coming to Me). Or Boy 2 has multiple personalities who get jealous of each other (Innocent). Or Boy 1 can read thoughts by touching people (Cherry Magic).
Sometimes writers also add another genre to the mix. E.g. BL + timeloop (Triage) or BL + crime (Manner of Death). In these cases the series often end up focusing more on the other genre.
Then you could chose an unusual narrative style or filmography style. Like a non-chronological or backwards story telling. Haven't seen that yet in BL, though.
And lastly, the actual relationship could avoid the classic tropes. Imagine that instead of the tropy "love-rival comes between them / cheating / senseless jealousy"-plot, Boy 1 and Boy 2 decide that monogamy is outdated and welcome multiple others to become part of their relationship. Or the hetero Boy decides to stay hetero because he is just not into guys, and the gay Boy ends up forever alone. Or instead of misunderstanding each other for 3/4 of the season, they actually talk with each other, voice their feelings and find compromises to make their relationship work.
I have been searching for a while. It seems that there is no official translation but I also could not find a fan translation. If you know Thai, you can find the original on meeb: https://www.mebmarket.com/ebook-72758-Love-Storm
Is it just me, or this whole series is a collective outbreak?
But in outbreaks, apocalypses etc. stuff is happening and shit is going down. In this show, NOTHING ever happens. At all. Ever. Any retirement home has more plot than this.
