I don't believe they were once lovers, they seem super close and comfy with each other. And when she told him to stay out of her life, he told her that he wouldn't do that.

I don't think it's just business, they most likely know each other very well. You don't rant to someone about your wife and tell them important things about your household if it's just business. They have a connection apart from her being his informant and we're yet to see it.
