Celebrity When Your Survival Plan Somehow Leads to Falling for Your Ancestor
I really enjoyed the comfort Yummy Yummy Yummy brought. This drama takes a slightly different approach to the usual time-travel formula by sending an entire family back to ancient times. Instead of one protagonist trying desperately to figure out how to survive, we get a whole family trying to adapt to a completely different world while looking for protection from their ancestor.
And honestly, watching this family navigate ancient times was SO much fun. It starts with a simple lie meant to save their lives, which naturally leads to one misunderstanding after another. Before long, that little lie spirals into an absolutely ridiculous situation involving a forbidden romance between a great-great-great-granddaughter and her ancestor. I had such a fun time binge-watching this, but honestly, what really made the drama work for me was the family dynamic. They genuinely had each other's backs through every difficult situation. I loved that they would actually sit down and have family meetings whenever there was a problem. Their communication was surprisingly healthy. No unnecessary “I will hide this from my family because I'm protecting them” nonsense. They covered each other's weaknesses, respected everyone's choices, and supported one another even when someone was making a questionable decision. There was something genuinely comforting about watching them stick together through every mess they created.
Their attitude toward being trapped in the past was also hilarious. At some point, they basically stopped trying to fight fate and decided to make the most of it. And what better way to do that than use their future knowledge to become wealthy in ancient times? Honestly, respect the hustle. Which brings me to the title. I'm honestly not sure why the culinary aspect is given so much emphasis in the title because, while food and Shen's Diner are important to the story, but the drama isn't really about chasing culinary greatness. The bigger story is about family, their relationship with their ancestor Lin Yan, and how they build a new life together.
And then there is the romance, which is probably the most complicated part of the whole mess. Shen Shao Guang falling for her ancestor is such a taboo relationship, completely defying the social norms and boundaries of their world. She knows it's forbidden and spends a lot of time trying to suppress her feelings, even to the point of hurting herself. Their romance isn't particularly steamy or full of dramatic romantic tension, but it has a very warm quality to it. Their careful, restrained approach to love actually made their relationship feel quite sweet, and I really enjoyed watching their feelings develop.
And Li Yun Rui? Sir. 🫠 He looks SO good here. He has that gentlemanly charm that feels ridiculously suitable for the period setting. Overall, this drama was just a really enjoyable comfort watch. It's silly, chaotic, wholesome, and surprisingly heartwarming. The family chemistry alone made the binge worth it for me.
