Unfiltered Rant: A Mess of Missed Potential

Oh God. SPRING OF THE BLADE, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU???

If you’ve been watching C-dramas long enough, you probably already know both leads. And yes, I’m a big Xu Kai fan, so how could I not be excited for this? I mean, Yan Rui is HOT. The smugness, the arrogance, that “I can do whatever I want and somehow get away with it” attitude, and plus those deep brown eyes... honestly, he was the eye candy carrying me through this dark drama. And despite all that, what I thought was going to be a great drama turned into a massive disappointment. I genuinely thought this was going to be one of those dark, revenge-driven dramas that completely pulled me in. Instead, the further I got into it, the more everything started falling apart. You can absolutely blame my expectations for this one because the premise had so much potential.

For starters, why was this drama filmed in such ridiculously dark lighting? The lighting is gloomy almost throughout the entire drama. I understand wanting a dark and mysterious atmosphere, but you don't need to make every scene look like it’s happening at midnight. Then there’s the Xie family, who are rotten to the core. They're rotten to the core, but the drama never gives enough convincing motivation behind their actions. Watching everything they did was enough to raise my blood pressure because they were basically awful just for the sake of being awful.

And my biggest rant has to be the whole plot twist surrounding Madam Xie, the father’s identity, and the Xie family secret. The drama tries to turn her regret over the past into this huge emotional revelation, especially when she claims that she’s trying to atone for her sins by protecting Xie Qing Yuan, something she failed to do for her own daughter. BUT HELLO??? You were also the woman who stood by and supported the father’s decision to send the female lead, a physically vulnerable woman, into the middle of a riot filled with rebels, all in the name of protecting the Xie family. You watched your own family mistreat your only blood relative, for fuck’s sake! And now we’re supposed to accept this sudden wave of guilt and redemption? The whole thing completely contradicts her previous actions.

And then we get to the biggest problem: the plot itself. The plot completely loses the plot.

The premise was genuinely interesting at the beginning, but somewhere around the middle, the story started losing direction. By the final stretch, it felt like the writers were rushing to tie together ten different storylines at once. There were so many plot holes and convenient decisions that I eventually stopped trying to make sense of them. Xie Qing Yuan's storyline actually made sense to me. I understood her motivations and why she was willing to go after the Xie family the way she did. Yan Rui, however? What exactly are we doing here? 😭

One of the most ridiculous things to me was how Yan Rui could just walk into the female lead's internal family meetings whenever he wanted, and somehow nobody could do anything about it simply because he was an official. Aren't family affairs supposed to be private? The fact that everyone just seemed to accept his presence made no sense to me. This man supposedly came back to uncover the truth about his family and take down corruption, yet so much of his storyline revolved around showing up whenever the female lead was in trouble. And honestly, I started questioning whether his constant intervention was even helping her. Everyone could clearly see that he was backing her, so wouldn't that just make her position even more vulnerable?

If the writer intended Yan Rui's constant rescuing and unwavering support for Xie Qing Yuan to come across as romantic simp behavior, then they completely missed the mark. His actions actually made the whole “Xie Qing Yuan is my blade” premise feel pointless. Xie Qing Yuan was introduced as a smart and cunning woman who knew how to navigate the dangerous dynamics within her own family. Yet Yan Rui kept stepping in whenever she was in trouble, even to the point of openly backing her during family matters where his presence made little sense. At some point, it stopped feeling like romantic devotion and started undermining the female lead's own capabilities. That disconnect really bothered me because it weakened both characters. Xie Qing Yuan became less capable than she was initially portrayed, while Yan Rui's motivations became increasingly muddled.

And Zhou Ye... God damn it. 😭 I was actually looking forward to seeing her in a darker revenge role, but I could constantly feel that she was acting. Her expressions often felt stiff and awkward, especially during scenes that were supposed to carry a lot of emotional weight. Whether her character was devastated, furious, or calculating, I struggled to feel the emotion behind her performance or connect with her character. Honestly, I don't know what went wrong here. The cast was promising, the premise was promising, and the potential was definitely there. But the writing, editing, character motivations, and rushed plot completely lost me. Xu Kai face was doing a lot of heavy lifting, because without him I don't know if I would've finished this.
