Good job on writing an article, but I hate dubbing and I disagree with all of your points. Different dialects and accents bring out different flavors in characters and in stories and make a drama more enjoyable. I tend to like Taiwanese dramas more and I like how they incorporate Hokkien in their dramas. It's a fact that Hokkien is spoken in Taiwan and therefore it's natural it's in their dramas. But China wants to deny that other dialects/accents exist in their country and I can't stand for that.

And actors' tones not matching their characters? They're actors! If someone is not suitable, they should cast someone else rather than try and Frankenstein a performance. There are too many dramas where the ML is dubbed with some stupid comically deep voice that doesn't match their visuals or the FL that's shrill and unlistenable.

Surrounding noise and bloopers? That's just China's lazy production and it also creates lazy actors because, why bother remembering lines or emoting when a dubber will just do it for them? And at the risk of getting too political, it's also China's way of censoring not jut the content of the drama but also denying that China has a diverse culture that includes different dialects/accents.

In the end, I would say rather than making the characters more memorable, dubbing makes all Chinese actors seem interchangeable to me. I have a hard time recognizing Chinese actors in a drama because they have different voice actors dub them in different dramas (ie. Yang Mi's character in Chinese Paladin 3 sounds vastly different than her character in Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms and again very different than Yang Mi's real voice in Storm Eye).

I'm working on English subs for this, but the going is slow since I just do it as a hobby. I'm up to episode two and might do one episode a week. If anyone wants the SRT files for the first two episodes, let me know.

I watched Qi Xia Wu Yi with Vincent Jiao and Sun Xing on repeat as a kid. Glad to see that someone else on the internet appreciates this gem!
