This film represented what it must have felt like growing up in Tokyo in the 90s, where easy access to sex, coupled with the lack of money, loneliness and uncertainty made life harsh. Not to mention, the Japanese economy was booming and life was no longer as simple thanks to the internet and mobile phones. The VHS format brought me back to my older days, but the way it was filmed with those close-up shots and constant moving camera made me uncomfortable. Either the director was a pervert or he intended to film that way to make the viewer anxious and feel a part of the characters' world.
There was little plot or character development but it was all about the experience of teenage angst and growing up. I didn't particularly enjoy it though I don't think it's a bad movie. I guess if you relate to it, you might enjoy it much more.
This one's not for the conservative viewer even though there is no explicit nudity or sex scene.

P.S What were the parents of these teenagers doing?! Goes to show that irresponsible parenting exposes kids to an ugly, messed up world which might take them a lifetime to recover from.

That's a question all of us must have asked ourselves at some point regardless of the kind of family we were born into.
Yes, it is unfair, and heartbreaking. Nobody deserves to be born into a world like that.. and to think that Shuhei probably never got to know better because that's the kind of world he was exposed to since birth. Sigh..

All I'd say is count your blessings, and help others if you can, because everyone isn't as lucky.

I am surprised by the low ratings. A smartly written, gripping and unpredictable plot with 2 hot complex leads. This one had me hooked till the end. Way ahead of its time for 2003. What more do you need?
Highly recommended if you're looking for something thrilling.

A sad coming-of-age story focusing on the journey of 3 friends from adolescence to adulthood, filled with deep bonding, love, yearning and heartbreak. The smooth direction, nuanced writing, and powerful performances of the leads made this a great watch.
Highly recommended for all.

P.S I don't think this is merely an LGBT+ story. It is much more than that.

I FREAKING LOVED THIS.

I can't remember the last time I loved a lead pair as much. A smart witty female lead, and an empathetic and flirty male lead; oh man, I didn't know how much I was craving for something like this. Their banter had the perfect balance of wit and flirtation which was so so fun to watch. They challenged each other all the time and were equals in every way despite being teacher / student. Only Japan could put a twist on something that appears creepy into something that was so heartwarming, deep and fun. It was all thanks to the writing which was always self-aware, and the leads who had natural, crackling chemistry. I can see myself rewatching this when I am bored.
Highly highly recommend this sensitive, refreshing and fun gem for all :)

And yes, you got to watch this to understand why so many people love it despite the forbidden romance. As they say, never judge a book by its cover.

Season 2 / special episode please.

I don't even know what to say.. what was the boy's fault?! He was born to the wrong mother. She screwed and scarred the boy for life. Even if she dies, I wonder.. will he survive? His mum didn't just make him codependent, but she diminished every inch of his self worth. I doubt he'll ever be able to lead a healthy life and experience the little joys of life that every human deserves.

The one critique I have for this film is that Shuhei's thoughts and feelings were not given enough attention. I wanted to hear his voice so much more. That ending monologue was absolutely heartbreaking.

This one drained me. The violence, psychological abuse, poverty and despair one can be faced with, and to think this is based of a real story; heartbreaking.

All I will say is that watch this only if you're ready to have your heart broken for the little boy who was destroyed by his own mother. Unfortunately, society wasn't kind enough to care either. The mother sucked, but she too was dealing with mental illness that no one ever paid attention too, and you can't help but pity her even though you're so disgusted by her. What makes this film so amazing is that it can be looked at in either ways; a mother's abuse or a son's unconditional love for his mother.

The acting and direction were freaking stellar. Nagasawa Masami and Okudaira Daiken deserve all the awards they won for this film. I hope that the actors were fine after filming this because I can't even imagine how disturbed they must have been. All in all, a grueling yet great film. Japan does this genre best.

She was fantastic in Wandering. She's come a long way. Looking forward to watching her do more challenging roles.

I don't get it why the marority of Jdramas are about fake/arranged marriage??
LOL this is a shoujo romance drama. You should watch the regular J dramas which are not shoujo romances and have way more variety. Majority of J dramas are pretty dark / slice of life.

Bloomingtide made a really nice comment explaining what did really mean. There were some mistranslation from Korean…
I've been watching K dramas since the 90s so I understand what the dialogues meant and I'm not taking the literal 'pure' meaning. Also, the dialogue itself was messy. The writer didn't write that well. But fact is the leads don't walk the talk as I explained further, and the worst they refuse to own up to the fact that they're both clearly giving mixed signals.
They act like they're stuck in a messy situation when they've clearly been the one to decide to act that way.
