The thing I have with that though is that I feel it would make more sense for the father to use his son for political advantage (which is a real thing) and to manipulate Do Ha into loving him by giving him what he wants and pretending to love him. That would give us a smart and believable villain, instead of the caricature we've been served.

Agreed. Yes, it happened, but it's difficult to make it palatable for a modern audience, particularly when it's not a gritty political drama. But I think the rating was a bit low even before they introduced the 'age gap' couple, but I think it went lower after that? I still like it better than Park's Marriage Contract, because in that one I'm really struggling with the ML being such an arse in his modern form.

I think he's the bad guy because she said "I've been blind all this time" so it needs to be someone close to her that she never had a reason to suspect. And his evil face in (I think it was) ep 2 when he held the tie up like a noose .
