Changes have been detected in the production landscape of the drama “Granny,” which is being prepared as a Netflix original series. Sanaa Pictures (CEO Han Jae-deok), a subsidiary of Kakao Entertainment (hereafter Kakao Entertainment), which had initially been listed as a co-production company alongside Studio Dragon (CEO Jang Kyung-ik), a subsidiary of CJ ENM, has abruptly withdrawn from the project. As a result, some changes in the collaboration structure between Kakao, which holds the original IP (intellectual property), and CJ ENM affiliates, which are leading production, appear inevitable.
Industry observers believe that disagreements over profit distribution and equity shares played a role in the collapse of the joint production. Sanaa Pictures reportedly requested an increased share of profits and equity based on the fact that its parent company, Kakao Entertainment, holds the IP of the original webtoon. However, the gap in positions could not be narrowed during negotiations with Studio Dragon.
If “Granny” proceeds as a solo production, it is seen as an opportunity for Studio Dragon to once again demonstrate its global production capabilities. Through collaboration with director Han Dong-wook, who directed “The Worst of Evil,” the project is expected to deliver a stylish action noir, backed by experience from multiple successful global projects.
the inner “brain structure” of Go Youn-jung’s character:
A significant part of Eun-a’s mind is occupied by the company “Choi Film,” where she works as a planning PD (producer). Thanks to her sharp insight and refreshing style of reviewing scripts, she earned the nickname “Axe PD.” However, her exceptional talent has ironically become a source of trouble.
Her abilities provoke intense jealousy from her boss, CEO Choi Dong-hyun (played by Choi Won-young). This hints at Eun-a’s fierce struggle for survival as she tries to protect herself amid the checks and pressures from both her superior and colleagues.
Deep within her mind lies “anxiety.” Whenever relationships falter or she faces unexpected emotions, she suffers nosebleeds. These are physical signals triggered when deeply buried past wounds resurface. While she appears flawless and sharp on the outside as a script reviewer, her fragile inner world raises curiosity about the origins of her instability.
Her grandmother, Ga Su-ja, is more than just family to Eun-a. Filling the void left by the absence of her mother, her grandmother raised her with devotion—rolling kimbap every dawn. She remains a quiet, steady presence who reassures those around her despite life’s hardships, symbolizing a calm center in Eun-a’s life.
Lastly, Hwang Dong-man (played by Koo Kyo-hwan) is someone who brings a refreshing change to Eun-a’s world. While others dismiss him as exhausting for having failed to debut for 20 years, Eun-a sees in him a resilience and vitality stronger than anyone else.
The drama’s production team shared, "The main poster captures the waltz scene between Seong Hui Ju and Yi An, which was briefly shown in the teaser, transforming it into a romantic memory just for them. We hope viewers will feel the same enchanting sensation as they watch this unforgettable ballroom scene. Please look forward to seeing how the Grand Duchess and her Prince will move toward their shared future, hand in hand."
Park Eun Bin is currently considering to appear. A representative from her agency, Namoo Actors, told Ilgan Sports, “It is true that she has received an offer for the project and is positively reviewing it.”
She has reportedly been offered the role of Consort Hyeon Gaeri, the villainous concubine who leads the story. One reason her casting is considered highly likely is that she is a fan of the original novel. In a past magazine interview, she revealed that she enjoys reading romance novels and had read “The Wicked Queen” with great interest, even hoping it would one day be adapted into a drama.
Casting is currently underway for the handsome Emperor Eon, who will lead the story alongside Gaeri, as well as the kind-hearted Princess Inwon, who will serve as her romantic rival.
The drama will be produced by Arc Media, and its distribution platform has yet to be decided.
Jung Hae In and Shin Se Kyung have been offered roles in the new drama “Love Virus.” However, Jung Hae In’s agency, FNC Entertainment, stated on the same day that “He has received an offer to appear in the project, and is under review.” Shin Se Kyung’s side has not yet responded.
They started its first filming in Gangwon Province last month. The initial shooting was slightly delayed compared to plans due to casting and pre-production processes.
“Soul” is a highly secretive project, with even the planning documents closely guarded. Currently, the only confirmed detail is that it is a historical romance.
According to drama officials, actors are provided with short, controlled scripts to prevent leaks. While the actors must quickly memorize their lines in a tight schedule, the combination of skilled actors and experienced staff has created a warm and friendly atmosphere on set.
In addition to Kim Go-eun and Kang Dong-won, “Hon” will feature Choi Hyun-wook, Bang Hyo-rin, Kim Shin-rok, and Song Yoon-ah.
Broadcast schedule and network placement are currently under discussion.
