If I hadn´t watched "Legend of the condor heroes" (2017) I would be just as confused as you. Although I´m not an expert of Jin Yong universe I can tell you Nine yin true sutra is the story of Mei ruohua/Chengfeng. Everything is connected but this one you can actually watch on it´s own and you will understand either way. This one plays way before the heroes series though. So you can watch it before if you want to know better when you watch the heroes. From what I have seen Mei Chengfeng is just a guest role in the heroes so ... I think you understand.
