It answered questions from many people here who complain why she left him, and why they didn't communicate, etc. i do agree if most of story so far just back and forth present and in the past, while little progress in the present day. but it's not the same thing like you said. 1-2 episodes ago it tell why she left when they're early 20's, recent episode tell why she left when they're late 20's.
Probably next episodes will tell why she left when they're late 30's

in the end he probably become more mature by move on.
and like you said, the more you watch, the more it gave vibe that they won't end up together. i think we as viewer slowly to see in his perspective. we too are prepared if they not become something in the end, maybe that what he felt too. after two break up, his present journey is not to be together with her, but help himself by helping her.
