The pitch was really good. So, I jumped with pleasure in this drama. After 20 minutes of episode one.........Damn,…
I'm laughing so much at your savage commentary lol! Pure gold! So agree with you tho, this is like a wattpad story coming to life (but it's also my guilty pleasure).
This was incredible! Not only because of its unsettling storyline and realistic dialogue but also especially because of the way it manages to play with time and reality. The cinematic repetition and the unreliable narrator give dimension to an otherwise pretty straightforward plot. Combined with an absolutely stellar performance of the cast, I can't do anything but praise the movie for packing a real punch. Would recommend to anyone (although, beware, it isn't necessarily an easy watch because of the heavy content material).
Hm.. a very Sherlock-esque ending. I hope that things do get resolved in the special or the movie because the final episode definitely leaves me with many questions. I am happy with this puzzle tho, it's a great set-up for a sequel. The only critique I have is that I wish the whole battle with Moriya had happened sooner because it would have brought a bit more coherency to all the previous cases.
I quickly read your dramalist and was surprised. You are one of the few people who watched Liar Game (Japan version,…
Omg you're so right, Liar Game is actual bonkers when it comes to dramatics! But I must say that that show is also a bit of an outlier in my case since I watched it as a teen and it was my very first Japanese series ever so it holds a lot of nostalgic value for me (so many sleepless nights binge watching that one lol, I can still sing the theme song). But maybe I should give Penthouse another try then, I do remember it touching upon some very fundamental social issues like performance anxiety and class inequality, so maybe I'll actually be able to take away something if it is indeed packaged in that dark comedy you're talking about!
Edit: also so fun to come across someone who's watched Liar Game lol, I feel like that show went under the radar of many!
It's ridiculous as fck, and the plot twists are so over the top ... you get kinda curious what absolutely unbelievable…
LOL thanks guys! I guess there is indeed a certain appeal to watching absurdity on screen? I mean how many Korean shows get 3 seasons? Maybe I'm just not the target audience (or maybe I should wait to watch this until I'm in the mood to trash talk lol).
Could someone explain the appeal of this show to me? I think I've watched the first 3 episodes of season one and it was a hot mess lol. Is there some sort of drastic plot change that makes this show so popular? I really couldn't deal with the overtly clichéd dramatics of it all hahah
This was an absolute masterpiece! Hands down one of the best Chinese shows I've watched this year. Three dimensional characters, intriguing storyline, a perfect setting and atmosphere, and above all, a solid OST. I wouldn't change a thing! It's a very character driven series (the progression and development of everyone's personality was incredibly realistic and their choices reflect their character) but there is definitely enough action and suspense to keep your average thriller-junky interested. Each individual storyline weaves seamlessly into the larger plot: who is responsible for the mysterious snowman killings in Harbin? Finding evidence may be a bit more complex (and personal) than initially thought. Would recommend to literally anyone!
Edit: I already know it's gonna be such a struggle to find a new show to watch that matches this story in quality and intensity lol.
Omg this is so nostalgic! I remember watching this in 2008 but I had completely forgotten about it since. Fond memories! Not sure if I can rate this objectively since I was in my early teens at that time lol but I remember having a blast.
I can only describe this movie as a big 'meh'. It wasn't actually bad but I just wasn't really invested in any of the characters nor in the story line itself.
Honestly I see a lot of people complain about the ending but, in my opinion, I think the final episode is truly part of the series' strong storytelling. Sure, everything goes to shit but that is exactly what makes this storyline so interesting: it is meant to spark discussions and get us to (re)think what it is exactly that makes us human (is it an innate quality or is it our actions or our emotions? Can it be learned? Can artificial humans be human? Do humans per definition act humane?). Gu Reum and Zi-O embody two seemingly opposing forces: humanity (good) and non-humanity (evil). The fact that Ha Neul dies sacrificing herself while Zi-O lives on makes us question to what extent we can go against our 'nature'. In that sense the show also brings in an ethical approach to a Darwinist 'survival of the fittest' idea (which is not at all what Darwin himself focused on in his work) since Zi-O is the genetically superior being here. But is he really the 'fittest'? Or is Gu Reum, in sacrificing herself for her child, the actual strong individual? These questions and the message of the show would have been diluted if it had taken the sappy happy romance route. We got enough romantic moments for us to imagine what could have been. So, yeah, if your looking for your next fluffy story: look somewhere else. But if you are looking for a thrilling and somewhat pessimistic story that sparks good debate: this may be a good watch.
Solid story and execution. While the story might not necessarily be that unpredictable, I absolutely loved the characters and the suitable ending. There is a sense of empathy and melancholy that underlies this story, which is an atmospheric type of storytelling that I usually mostly find in Korean independent, life-themed movies (often made by female directors). It worked surprisingly well in this investigation-mystery.
