AGH why did everyone sleep on this drama? Did Tencent not promote it? IT IS SO GOOD!! I'm on ep 20 and I'm already sad that it will have to eventually end.

seriously. if I find something boring I drop it. there are other things to do....watch old stuff, take your dog for a walk...watch paint dry. no need to come on MDL and complain about how you have no ability to amuse yourself.

I'm baffled as to the MDL score on this one (though I'll say I'm often baffled here as it would seem that MDL folks and I frequently do not share the same taste.) Do people not like light comedy at all? If so, maybe take a pass on this one.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this drama - even though it has a very silly premise and is fantastical in many aspects, everyone has committed to it and gosh, the acting from EVERYONE especially the guest actors and the side characters is great (LYX can always be relied on, and this finally lets me know that yes SY can act but the poor woman has been handed so many lackluster characters. I'm looking at you Luoyang and My Heroic Husband).
I am loving how round and interesting *all* the female characters are, though Yan Nanxing and Xiao Bai's mom are just *chef's kiss*. They're so well written - they're ambitious, smart, and capable but also fallible and human - maybe a little vain or stubborn, maybe a little impulsive, maybe a littttle crazy.

And anyone who says the two leads don't have chemistry - I don't know what to say to you. Perhaps one of us needs glasses?

Finally something to get me out of my drama slump!! This is totally my jam and so far it is really well done. Zhou Yiwei is great (no surprise). I only wish they had given it a slightly more interesting title? (also can we please settle on translating Di Renjie to either Judge or Detective?? because sigh). Why are there so many dramas that are not from 2023 on this list? Goblin? Scarlet Heart Ryeo?? Also lmao, Only for Love near the top - possibly the drama that I have read the most negative reviews of this year. What is up with the taste on this site?
Ripe Town and Oh No! Here comes trouble - two of the best cdramas I've ever watched came out this year and are nowhere on this list. Smh.

Thank you for this great essay. I struggle with hyped dramas - as well as struggling not to over-hype things I'm enjoying when telling others about it. The worst feeling is having someone gush about something to you, then you watch it and wonder if you're missing something, or that person has low standards/bad taste or ??? 😂.
I'll often avoid watching something that's hyped because I know I'm likely to over-analyze it (in a bad way) and less likely to enjoy it - unless it happens to be in a genre that I'm partial to.
There are so many different genres and varieties out there - definitely something for everyone - hopefully we can all find that one drama that scratches our particular itch.

I believe they're all rumors, though pretty sure XSY is all but confirmed (I think his fanclub confirmed which is not official). None of the actresses are more than rumor.

I have to agree. The script and direction/pacing of the drama is very mid. It doesn't match up to the two leads, who are great actors and doing as well as they can. With the serious themes they seem to want to explore in this show, I think a 12 episode drama (with a different director and screenwriter obvs) that focus equally on the CP romance and on medical research would have been more effective.

I couldn't take the inaccuracy (selling drugs?) and the overall style of the synopsis on this page so I just submitted an edit that uses the official Youku synopsis. Since I'm not a known quantity around here, what are my chances that it will be accepted??

So far I'm really impressed with ZRN. She's adorable, but she can also act. She and LYX are a cute pair.

it's a fictional country in "Northern Africa" - though Lucaya is a real place in the Bahamas, this is "Lakaya" and is made up. Many of the characters are speaking French though which is a nice detail.

"Even if they are blind, you sound like a girl" I cackled and wanted to hug the screen when they did this. The humor in this drama is unsurpassed.

there appear to be a lot of (if not most) scenes which are using closed sets and live audio - no post production dubbing - just like Under the Microscope. It makes a huge difference to me in how immersed I am in the drama.
the scene where Sangeng is talking to Judge Song and there is no bgm - agh it was so good.
