I Was Hooked From Episode One… Until the Finale
I’m not even going to pretend — I like Fan Xiao. He’s complicated, emotionally restrained, and clearly carrying a lot of internal conflict, which is exactly why he’s so compelling to watch. The early part of To My Shore does an amazing job of making you feel his quiet pain and understand why he acts the way he does. That intensity is a huge reason the beginning of the series works so well. That said… liking him doesn’t mean ignoring the red flags. Fan Xiao avoids confrontation, struggles with honest communication, and tends to take emotional control of situations without realizing how much damage it causes. His “silent endurance” often leaves other characters confused or hurt, even if his intentions aren’t malicious. It’s frustrating because you can see he cares, he just doesn’t know how to express it in a healthy way. What really hurts is the ending. As someone who actually likes Fan Xiao, I wanted the show to go deeper with him. I wanted growth, accountability, or at least a proper emotional reckoning. Instead, the finale feels rushed and flat, glossing over his flaws instead of resolving them. It almost feels like the drama was afraid to fully challenge him, which does his character a disservice. Overall, To My Shore had such a strong, emotionally intense start and a character like Fan Xiao who could’ve been unforgettable. I still like him , probably always will but the weak ending left me feeling like we were robbed of the character development and payoff he deserved.
