I'm not your average BL drama watcher. Or just in general, I'm not your average person on the internet. But stuff all that, this drama is so frickin amazing.
Tbh this is the first time I've ever commented on ANYTHING, but I just have so many thoughts to share on this drama and BL in general, and why not boost the comments (a very tiny bit) on possibly my favourite BL drama ever?
WARNING: ESSAY INCOMING
My first EVER drama was The Untamed, a chinese Censored Adaptation (BL) drama. That was the start of my drama adventure. After watching that, I decided not to watch those censored type of BLs, because they simply frustrated me. There was sooo much chemistry between the male leads but justjwlwjrgwergwevjqehrq. Anyway, that aside, I started checking out a lot of korean dramas and some other stuff. btw, at this point, I hadn't watched any BLs, only 3 censored BL dramas (The Untamed, Word of Honor, Killer and Healer --> I LOVE THEM ALL), all three of them chinese (censored) historic dramas.
tbh I got kind of bored of dramas, and stopped watching for a while. I was watching a random video, I think it was called the gayest moments in kpop? or something like that, and I stumbled across some fan BL videos/edits on youtube, and I got interested.
The first "proper" BL (not-censored) drama I watched was Theory of Love (Thai), and my reaction was mixed. I fricking loved seeing a queer relationship in a drama, not just the regular straight ships, but at the same time... it was a bit cliche, and toxic for me. Btw, I am VERY picky with dramas that I like and not. So seriously, no hate towards the drama or the actors, the story of #offgun is WAY better in Not Me, I love that drama. Anyway, fast forward, I decide to give some more Thai BLs a go, and just BLs in general, and I see the same trend popping up again and again. Look, I am not an expert, but after watching a fair amount of Thai BL dramas... I just wasn't the biggest fan. It was too unrealistic for me, too cliche...
I've watched around 20-30 Thai BLs by now? Bad Bunny is not on that list, yet. While I love BL relationships, there were numerous things I didn't like about Thai BLs. (I'd like to mention, this is just a general feeling that I GET, I, and this is really only speaking for my PERSONAL OPINION, so don't come at me for stuff I say. This is also not EVERY Thai BL drama, ok? just in general). Also, please note, most of the following points DO NOT apply to Kinnporsche, I will go into KP later.
First of all, the toxicity that exists. I don't know how to explain it. Maybe it's a cultural difference. Maybe I was raised differently, yes I've lived under a rock most my life, but to me there is always this underlying toxic tone in a lot of the dramas. For example, Theory of Love (the way Khai treats Third), I told Sunset About You/I promised you the moon (just Teh's and Oh-aew's relationship in general, their jealousy and bad-communication), My Engineer (the main leads have some serious communication issues, and this constant jealousy, idk what to make of it), and other examples also include Sotus (S), Lovely Writer, TharnType, Don't say no, WHY R U, EN of Love: Love Mechanics, Enchante, Cutie Pie, etc. (just some I could think of off the top of my head).
Secondly, having not just one gay couple, but 2 or even 3+ is just unrealistic (cough Theory of Love). Within the same friendship group? 3 gay couples? And within the family, both brothers are gay (cough Leo and Leon - don't say no)? I am not saying this never happens irl, but it is just a VERY common theme that I think is overdone, unnecessary, and makes the drama unrealistic and too much for me. And again I want to emphasise, I LOVE, seriously LOVE, gay couples, but when all the main characters are in a gay relationship its like ._. idk what to think. Btw if i keep mentioning the same drama names its only because i remember those dramas better than the others.
Thirdly, Engineers. Just, engineers. SO OVERDONE PLEASE STOP. For example, Sotus, Sotus S, My Engineer, Theory of Love, ETC. Please, we need to get away from Thai BLs = engineer. Yes, I am exaggerating, however that was honestly what kept me away from Thai BLs for a long time, because I heard so many people always say that. My friend always said something like "Thai BLs, oh the leads will surely be engineering students." One, well that's not always true, there are so many good BLs where that is not the case, and I even like some of those engineer student dramas, but just the image that sticks to Thai BLs, and the cliche of Thai BLs... it exists for a reason.
Fourthly, the adds. PLEASE. Does that need any explanation? In Not Me, the main characters are on the run or something, and then all we see for 5 seconds is the BRIGHT BLUE and BRAND NEW CAR that they're driving in? I get that there are funding problems otherwise, etc but it's just so o3bfk1bg3hgv :((( or when they always eat the same seaweed snack or something? Or they're (VERY OBVIOUSLY) advertising a drink??? by getting the lead to hold it out for a long time and then drink it in a "sexy" way??? ahhhhhhh its so embarrassing and annoying and just ugh so please if you are rich and reading this go sponsor some BLs please. Yes this has NOTHING to do with the actors or dramas themselves but it's something that lowers my opinion of some Thai BLs in a way?
Fifth of all, plot. Character development. Overall script writing. It's just not on the same level for me as a lot of korean (non-BL) dramas for example. I don't even want to explain this, but just every Thai BL that I've finished watching has left me wondering if the scripts were written that way on purpose because they think it will attract a bigger audience, and if yes... then whY?
Sixth of all, EmBaRrAsSiNg scenes. Why does EVERY, legit EVERY thai BL drama have scenes where I start cringing and have to fast forward? Even some of my favs had scenese i had to fast forward :(((
Lastly, and maybe even most importantly, just the cliche-ness, and at the same time, unrealisticness of some dramas. Half the time, I'm just like wuuuut, really? Also someone please tell me if girls actually run after hot guys with their phones out, screaming like jrhervqmnvrv. IT FRUSTRATES ME SO MUCH EVERY TIME I SEE A SCENE LIKE THAT. Like yes, people murmuring, and rumours about famous/good-looking people spreading, and people gossiping, but on THAT level? With people running after that person? Does that ACTUALLY happen? Maybe I am just naive and in a small bubble, but I genuinely want to know. Also WHY does every second drama have a famous character in it? like just a genuine question? It always alludes to me that mainly rich people are gay? (again i'm not saying all, just a lot of dramas have rich characters in them)
If you've actually made it to the end of my short essay lol, I'd just like to say that I am in NO way hating on any actors, they literally have no control over story, plot, etc
You might also be wondering, why the HELL did I watch quite a few Thai dramas and why do I still watch them? The answer is quite simple; in order for them to get better, they need support. By discussing these dramas, more people watch them, they receive more attention and they receive more funding etc MEANING only if more people watch them will they get BETTER. That's also why I have quite a lot of hope for KinnPorsche tbh. The plot is different. The cast is not your regular cast, but new faces (the leads at least). Have I been 100% satisfied with every single episode (i mean there have been 3 so far lol)? almost. is there room for improvement? there always is. To me though KP has this weird charm almost, and I am excited to see where it will go. Why do I like KP so much (so far)?
Multiple reasons, some listed above, but also, I LOVE this genre and prefer it over most other genres. I am so happy that we are finally getting something NEW. Not Me was a huge improvement in terms of plot for me already, and I think KP is pushing it even more.
