This story has been adapted and needs to be softened. The writer who wrote the novel often writes imperfect, flawed characters who learn from each other to both be better people. (And these two better people, who learned to be better, could indeed have a happy ending). At least that's what I would like. I like stories of redemption, not irremediable tragedy. (And in a romance that has a happy ending, there's room for the writers to have improved the story so that this happy ending can be maintained.) At least, that's what I would like.
