Sui Yuanqing was crafted in a lab specifically to appeal to me, I'm afraid... more than a little crazy, constantly getting captured (initially scary but in reality a total boyfailure), very fiery in loyalty and revenge, and holds a bit of a delusional candle for the MC till the very end. I'm really gonna miss him as a character, to be honest.
On ep 25... bro publicly giving her a punishment but barging in to take the punishment for her is CRAZY. The whole cadre of military men AND a princess all basically playing along with making sure this high-ranking official's weirdly buff little wifey doesn't find out who he is is SO fucking funny to me.
Okay sorry for saying this out loud but crazy evil guy trying to kiss Changyu and her kinda stabbing him and him kinda liking it... this whole scene is kinda doing something for me. Hmm.
On episode 18... I was wondering, writing-wise, how Changyu would leave Lin'an. That... that'll do it. Yup yup…
I like how their solution to "why would female protagonist with deep roots to this town ever want to leave it?" was just.. "what if we fucking kill everybody? just, the whole town? all of them." And they even already ferried away our favourites to safety via conscription! How convenient!
Them straight up ambushing Song Yan, putting a bag over his head & beating the shit out of him in the middle of the street... has to be one of the funniest things I've ever seen in a drama. That's my power couple.
I'm sorry but them SLAPPING the bird (not a real bird, I know) is making me dislike them against my will. Like, stop slapping him!!! He's just a little guy! They're hitting him so hard, wtf;;;
The names *are* weird. It's very clear that they are supposed to sound like Western names, but they don't. They sound like a person who doesn't speak English trying to come up with western sounding names and failing. Failing very very hard. They're phonetically a monstrous hodge-podge of Latin, French, English, Germanic, and like--- Indian? Rashta & Sovieshu straight up sound Indian? The setting is clear, the competence is not. They're worse than the supposed "English" names in Death Note, and those are awful. Hearing those names in Korean phonology is going to sound even stupider. (And while it might have billions of viewers, billions of readers is.... uh... not correct. That's very not correct.)
I'm about 30 episodes in, and I gotta say- this is shockingly good. I usually tire of dramas like this- they can…
I *really* wanted Ji Bozai to be like "No, mom, I don't resent you because you traded me for another child when I was a baby because I didn't have a magic vein. I resent you because you were a shitty abusive mother to my wife, and even after raising her for 20+ years, still thought it was okay to tell her that you never thought of her as your child."
I'm about 30 episodes in, and I gotta say- this is shockingly good. I usually tire of dramas like this- they can get really tedious. But this hasn't had that feeling *at all* - they seriously put some special sauce in this one. The chemistry is *electric*, the leads are gorgeous, the plot EXISTS, and I actually feel like the drama appreciates my time- instead of like other dramas where important things only happen like, every 6 episodes, and meanwhile they're just treading water.
At this point why don't they just recast his role. I feel bad for the rest of the cast
The whole drama is filmed already, it'd be crazy undertaking to change the lead. (I mean, granted they did it before with that historical drama, but a year+ out since it was filmed and it'd be an impossible task.)
Honestly, this drama was better than I expected it to be, and the length definitely helped. It was fluff with heart. It was short and sweet, but still had enough substance to be interesting- the FL's arc of recovering from the trauma of a breakup was done pretty well, and some decently clever things were done with the ML to make his role and his affection obvious even when he wasn't on the FL's radar yet.
(The AI slop images all over the sets was a huge flop though. As for the FL's acting; don't believe anybody complimenting or criticizing it too much. It was competent idol acting, nothing more, nothing less. Seo In Guk is a really phenomenal actor, and he acted enough for the both of them.)
...right???
