I also liked the Last Immortal and only found out after I finished it that it was a continuation of Ancient Love Poetry! I re-watched Ancient Love Poetry and then the Last Immortal again so I can have better context.
I will attempt an explanation. In ancient China, there is the belief that the dead must return to their place…
This is a wonderfully detailed explanation! Thank you so much for breaking this down and providing Chinese historical context! The scene makes so much more sense now!
“Then they went home to have wet dreams of each other. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA.” LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!
Doublets, can you help clarify on EP18 ~5:50, what XH means when he talks about prisoners verifying their identity and then about the lights turning off in Luyang and restless spirits being reduced to ashes (Netflix Eng subtitles)? Thanks!
Doublets, I am dropping Princess Royal for now. FL not calling to me. Sigh. Going to rewatch The Double on Netflix…
Same here. I was waiting for episodes to drop on Viki for PR, but just forgot about it and haven’t picked it back up. I did watch a funny KDrama, though, called Mr. Queen. Since I haven’t found a recent drama as good as The Double, I decided to try something completely different, a comedy, so I wouldn’t keep comparing it all the time and being disappointed. 😔
Unpopular opinion, I actually really liked the ending and though the epilogue was unnecessary~
I agree with you. I didn't think the epilogue was needed. My interpretation of the ending is that Duke Su comes back and fulfills his promise to her despite the odds. That said, if it was all a dream for either her or Duke Su, I would also accept that ending without being upset.
I like how the ending can be interpreted in multiple ways based on the viewer's understanding of all the information provided throughout the story and up to that point. Many things could have happened from the time it cuts from Duke Su, confronting the enemies alone, to Fang Fei, waiting for him. For example, given his close relationship with the Emperor, the Emperor would have been kept abreast of the situation and reinforcements could have already been on the way to help him. Also, if Duke Su had died, given his status, both sides would have wanted to know or would have known if he had died in the battlefield, so Fang Fei wouldn't have been waiting aimlessly forever, i.e., dreaming of him returning for years on end (the tree had grown so much since they first planted it and he left for war). Or Duke Su could have been captured by the enemy and used to barter war concessions from the Emperor (then later released once concessions were settled). Or Duke Su could have died and he imagined or dreamed of her running towards him, while Fang Fei imagined or dreamed of him returning to her as he had promised. Either way, the ending challenges the viewers to think about it and discuss it, versus making it straightforward and generic like other dramas.
I don't think the ending necessarily needs to give finality because the relationship between Duke Su and Fang Fei was solid throughout the drama.
Of course, my dear!! 😅 The problem is that after you let The Double enter your life, you don't let any other…
LOL, thanks for sharing that deeper meaning. 🤭 I, too, thought the romance was heavy...in their looks and their verbal sparring (well at least the parts that I understood). I liked that they knew they were both individually strong and relished challenging each other. I think that better conveys their relationship than just showing the physical aspects...though I wouldn't have minded more, the lack of it didn't impact how much I loved the drama. I thought the whole drama was really well done, from the script writing, to the costumes, production set, actors/characters, directing, and music. It is rare that I liked all of the music they used in the entire drama.

I so wish I can understand the complex exchange between the two of them like you can understand it! I'm losing so much of the meaning, I think, with the translations. Thanks for the snippet above! I didn't realize she told him that she would sing for his pleasure! 🫠

That's wonderful you already understand sentences and recognize words! I've also started trying to learn Mandarin, but am going slowly... It is a beautiful language and also very complex! Will look at YouTube. For now, I'm learning through Duo lingo, but it's been kind of frustrating because it doesn't really explain the sentence structure. Thanks for the suggestions!

Thanks! However, I noticed the Eng subtitles for Netflix are slightly different from Viki’s subtitles. The difference gave me new insights to XH’s and XFF’s interactions with each other. For example, in the scene where XFF asks XH to arrest her at Zhennv Hall, in Viki, XH wants to see what XFF is planning by being arrested. In Netflix, XH wants to see the act that XFF wants to show him by being arrested. I know these are subtle differences, but now I can understand the “play” references that the Doublets are citing in their comments and posts. I wish I can understand Mandarin…I think I would get a whole new special meaning if I did. I noticed this too when I saw Word of Honor on Prime vs Netflix.
🙌😊😊😊im adding one more post lol I’m starting today with The Spirealm. Hope it’s not another drop…
I liked The Spirealm, mostly because of the two main leads and their chemistry (and Xia Zhi Guang’s penetrating stares 🫠). Some of the Doors had really good storylines, while others were a bit lacking, but overall, I enjoyed it. Hope it works out for you! But if not, hope you find another drama that can hold your interest!
Asking doublets opinion here. Want to try another cdrama. Already dropped shenli and princess royal. Is blossoms…
Many have posted what I would have recommended, so here are some other options you may want to check out: - Scent of Time - My Journey to You - Back from the Brink - Wonderland of Love - Princess Agents
