Title Youth of May Spoiler
Even from the 1st episode, I knew this drama was going to break my heart. But damn, I didn't expect it to hurt…
You just described my feelings. The death scene was so realistic that I sobbed. And when I think about the people who actually live these things, my heart breaks.

Can I know what's the novel called?
The title of the novel is "Madonna in a Fur Coat".

In the hugging scene of episode 8, I remembered the following sentences written in a novel. I found it fit very well with this scene and the nostalgic romance of the drama. I felt like the sentences belonged to Hee Tae.

"If coincidence had not brought you in front of me, I would have lived the same way, but unaware of everything. You taught me that there is another kind of life in the world, and that I also have a soul."

"I can't remember ever being this happy and my heart expanding so much in my life. How was it possible for one person to make another person so happy without doing almost anything?"

"Of course, everyone else in the world was similarly endowed. But most would come into this world and leave it without even knowing what they had missed. A soul only came forward when it found its twin, when it felt no need to rely on mere words to explain itself… It was only then that we truly began to live—live with our soul. At that moment, all doubts and shame could be set aside. All rules could be broken, as two souls joined in embrace. All my inhibitions had disappeared.”

I thought about "The Rose" used in episode 8 of the drama. Frankly, the lyrics of this song gave me hope for a happy ending. Also, what the priest said in episode 8 was hopeful.

Now this song is so sad because of it's ending.
The lyrics really fits the drama.

"And the soul afraid of dyin'
That never learns to live"
She was afraid of dying but she didn't learn how to live.

"When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed that with the sun's love
In the spring becomes the rose"
Maybe Myung Hee was a rose that bloomed in May and lived her life, was in love and was happy, albeit for a short time.

As I saw the photos of Myung Hee laughing, I remembered these lines:

"How recklessly you laugh at life,
Your photographs don't know that you are dead."

I haven't watched the last two episodes yet. But I learned how it ended. I didn't expect it to affect me so negatively. My heart can't take it. I really liked Myung Hee. I can't believe she died. It's like I've lost a person I truly love. Despite everything, I had hope that they would be happy. I wish they were separated but Myung Hee didn't die. She had dreams and hopes. She was a strong woman. Even though I like Hee Tae very much, I'm mad at him. For causing her to stay in Korea.
I'm very sorry. I wouldn't call it a realistic ending. Pretty tragic ending. They could be saved. Despite everything, they could get together, even after years. I am also very angry with the screenwriter.
Thank goodness there is Hospital Playlist and Gumiho. I can find some solace in them.

Wait, what? This drama references El amor en los tiempos del cólera?? :-O may have to watch, then
Yes, that's right. :)

I love how this couple communicates and is open with each other. I love these quotes at the end of episode 4. I did not expect to see this kind of quote in this series. :)

Shin Woo-yeo: "There is always some madness in love.", as Friedrich Nietzsche wrote in "Thus Spoke Zarathustra". That you like someone means that you are misunderstanding that person in your own way. So what I'm trying to say is... You could be Fermina Daza to someone, and that's not a misunderstanding.

Lee Dam: Fermina Daza?

Shin Woo-yeo: She's a heroine from an old book. "To him, she seemed so beautiful, so seductive, so different from ordinary people, that he could not understand why no one was as disturbed as he by the clicking of her heels on the paving stones, why no one's heart was wild with the breeze stirred by the sighs of her veils, why everyone did not go mad with the movements of her braid, the flight of her hands, the gold of her laughter." He could not understand why anyone wouldn't fall in love with her.

Is it a very high quality and well written series, no. But the main male character is awesome. No matter how exaggerated and absurd the drama is, its male actor has an understated, clear acting. I fell in love with his voice. His diction is very good, when he speaks Korean sounds like the most beautiful language in the world. His character in the series is also a kind-hearted and polite gentleman. It is a series that will not tire your mind and the male character will warm you up. I think it's much more watchable than Doom. I'm looking forward to the next episodes. I hope the series keeps its comedy streak without drowning in unnecessary tragedy and gives us a joyful time. :)

I don't think the problem with this series was that there was a big age difference. Because we've watched couples with an age difference before(I Hear Your Voice, Secret Love Affair, Romance is the Bonus Book. Light in Your Eyes, One Spring Night...). I think there was no chemistry between the main couple. Even though I enjoyed watching their old times, Da Jung's old version bothered me. It was like she couldn't get into the acting role. Especially 13-14. What was the acting of the woman in the episodes, for God's sake? She acted like she was 15 years old and in addition the scenes were irritating. For example, there is a kissing scene at the end of episode 14. Pay attention to the acting of the female character in that scene. She is crying but her face looks like she is disgusted. I think I should point out that the script is also weak at many points. Especially in the episodes in 2020. I felt the emotion more intensely in the parts describing the old times. I wish old Dae Young would act in romantic scenes. There were times when I questioned the meaning of Yoon Sang Hyun's presence in the drama. I think it was a pity for him. In order to express the emotion more in very unnecessary scenes, those scenes were played by the old Dae Young. But there was always LDH in the romantic scenes. LDH acted great, but we can't deny that the script is weak.

I just couldn't love Chun Woo Hee and Han Ji Eun's characters. Especially CWH's. Her acting also bothered me. I know the script is good but unfortunately I couldn't continue. And it makes me sad. For example, Age of Youth left a pretty good impression on me compared to this series, even in the first episodes.

Episode 8, Hee Tae and Myung Hee were listening to the radio together...
Just wow...
"When i was a kid, i liked turning the dial like this more than listening to the radio. Whenever i turned the dial slowly like this, i sometimes heard a faint signal that sounded unfamiliar. That signal seemed like me. A signal that no one listened and floated around aimlessly in the universe with no sound or color. (Hee Tae finds Bette Middler - The Rose on the radio.) Until you found me like this."

Lyrics of song:
Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love, it is a hunger
An endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower
And you, its only seed
It's the heart, afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance
It's the dream, afraid of waking
That never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken
Who cannot seem to give
And the soul, afraid of dying
That never learns to live
When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed that with the sun's love
In the spring becomes the rose

Should I watch this?? I see comments like sad drama? I don't like sad?! Or should I wait till rest of the eps…
Yes I think, you should watch it. :) It's also a nice experience to get excited while waiting for this drama. The couple loves each other so beautifully. Even if it will not end happily, this series is worth watching. I am hopeful, I think we can see a happy ending. I think the scriptwriter breaks the cliché in some scenes in the series.

Hee Tae is an artistic, emotional and very kind person. The songs he listens also reflect him.
Bette Midler - The Rose, Annie's Song... I was fascinated by the scenes where the songs played in the drama. Myung Hee is a confident, strong, loving woman. The way both characters love each other is very intense. These beautiful people deserve happy ending.

Lee Do Hyun's acting is the most and only amazing thing about this drama. The starting point of the script was good. But the series could have been written better. I felt bored in scenes without LDH. That's why I left the series in episode 8. LDH deserved the award.
