Its not even a matter of the novel, really. The drama is showing so much of how pitiful she is. Its just that they dont want to accept a hurt person being weak. She needs time to heal, she needs to solve her issues, we're just 10 episodes in, why should she be perfect from the very first episode??

I think she explained herself very well.... ep 9 also showed how her mother got a strong hold of her and her bother.... its really simple to understand and to empathize with her, why some of you guys seems unable to understand??

People are scared of Xu Qin's mother being that crazy mom that shows up and warns and threatens and gives money, but that woman is so disgustingly terrifying she doesn't need it to control Xu Qin. That are few scenes of her acting up, but she got so deep into her children's mind she doesnt need to do anything to keep them under control. Vile btch. Hate her so much
