When you first meet him, it's like someone took all joy from his heart, leaving a monotonous husk. As they get closer, she finds a note in a book from someone (ex GF) saying that he doesn't deserve to love anyone. Later, she meets a publisher and they get along very well. But then she witnesses the publisher and her "husband' meeting and it is awkward for both. She pieces together comments made by both about a previous love and realizes that they are talking about each other. She realizes that no matter how much she and he love each other, there is heavy scar tissue protecting and imprisoning his heart. That prevents expression of real feelings. This is shown at the beginning of ep. 14. Some people are pretty angry that she ended the marriage and left him for 7 months without telling him where she was and what she was doing.
