My guess it was explaining about his feelings for her, how much she was important to him, and about why he took his life. That as much as she was important to him, it was not enough to let him continue his life. But she already had figured things out and had started to move on. If gym guy steps in, what would make him more acceptable to her Mother? Status and wealth. One reason for the tension with turtle guy is the quite austere lifestyle in saving for a house. So income may probably come into play. Gym hunk currently doesn't have a job that should bring in the lifestyle to satisfy her Mother.

I think Zhengyu's chemistry was like his character, more internal and lacking in understanding how to interact and in not knowing how to show the looks that show intimacy to women. Although women find 2021 Zhengyu attractive, he would be at best a one date man. One big problem with 2021 Zhengyu's relationship with Jialan was that he didn't know how to respond. To give the look to show interest and connection, to initiate touching or hugging or trying to hold a hand. Too use his voice to show emotion, care and understanding. I guess the interpretation was that four months wasn't enough to change everything. Their love isn't expressed with eye to eye contact. The looks are towards the camera or at each other. The actress expresses her love in bubbly excitement, but there wasn't enough quiet expressions of love. I think it's a problem with the directing. Just my two cents worth. I enjoyed Love in Time very much.
