Most of the people from that lane were dead and much burned. Ep. 19, 14:11 mentions over 500 dead and countless injured in Lin'an. A rebirth could keep the tempering and growth that both characters had undergone even if the exact circumstances are not remembered in the next life. Their story ends at ep. 38. with a promise. But we see one or the other separately following that and briefly together in the what if. I think that maybe their story together wasn't expected to be so popular with some viewers.

It is good. Perhaps this will help. On the surface it is a transmigration drama, but it really isn't. On the surface, yes, but at the end it is something else. The censors ban about not changing the past in dramas probably cause the ending, but it is a HE at the end.

The two were supposed to return to Lin'an, but with the destruction and over 500 killed and countless injured (ep. 19 - 14:11) it would be a pretty bleak homecoming and life in that lane would be very different.

It is not the first time that Deng Kai has played a compelling bad boy. He does it very well. I first noticed him in Destined and what he did to the woman's husband to get her to come to him. ugh. He started out like that in Butterflied Lover, Governor's Secret Love, Love of the Divine Tree, and The Wanted Detective but he wasn't so toxic. And they mostly ended well for his character. The first two have him in a nice romance. He reprised his toxic character in Follow Your Heart.

I would start with Dominion and Devotion. (2024) The Mirage (2025) might be worth a view next. Ensemble story. The others are also enjoyable. The Zheng Qing Jie, the director of this drama cut his teeth on mini-dramas and is known for elevating the performances of his actors. His A Familiar Stranger ( 2022) (with female Zhao Lin as screenwriter) is a favorite mentioned by cdrama watchers. Ryan Chen will be recognized from Legend of the Female General (2025) It's a sweet romance. Ke Yi and Kay Song are the female leads. You might like his The Killer is Also Romantic (2022) A Mr and Mrs Smith set in ancient China. Butterflied Lover (2023) Same director screenwriter duo, starts like a my wife is a vampire but is really a romance with two couples. Deng Kai is the second couple. Know that original Butterfly Lovers is a Romeo and Juliet story. Thank you.

Is is also an alternate time line when Chanyu comes back to Lin'an? I think that they show the people who had died including Mandi? It goes from a burning Lin'an to a pristine Lin'an.
