How far have you watched? In the drama, Luo Shu's past warp her present. in ep. 12, she says that she wants someone who will love only her in this life. She breaks up with Han Muzhi because he can't give up his fiancee which will make Luo Shu his concubine. What made her insecure? After her parents died in the fire, she was taken in by Wuniang who later became Madam Yu of Mingke House, and who lived at the Qin Mansion. It is not made clear in the drama, but in the novel, Madam Yu came from a brothel to become Second Wife but was expelled by the First Wife. Qin Yi might be her son. In the drama, Luo Shu's Father could not be moved by bribes and young Qin Yi to establish his usefulness the Qin Father and Governor Qi, the ML's Father offered to take care of Luo Su's Father, a minor official. He set the fire to their house and later sent men to look for Luo Shu and ultimately pick her up. That is why the placements of her past in the drama are significant. When in ep. 17 she is forced to play the pipa for Han Muzhi's fiancee and the other rich wives it cuts to her being forced out of the Qin Mansion and no one will help her. (People who say that they are close will betray her and the gulf between rich people and someone who was a courtesan at Mingke House) And in ep. 23 at the Qi Mansion with Menglin and the servant girls having a party it cuts to her living with her Mother and Father and then the fire. (Good times are temporary at best.) So as late as ep. 26 during the Lantern Festival when Mengiln says that he loves her and steals a kiss, she slaps him. But in ep. 29. he says the magic words. "He will only marry her. And if she doesn't agree. He will wait a lifetime for her."
Muzhi and Menglin are a contrast in fate. Muzhi climbs the ladder to success but he is alone. Menglin loses everything, is exiled and in poor health but Luo Shu comes to him. She weds him and it is significant that she recites the wedding vows.

The last episode, ep. 16. Try kisskh to view the whole drama. In that episode he asked his friend, the Reaper, to kill him at the beach before the blood moon rises and to drink his blood to free his friend from his own curse. But just before he could do that, the FL is there so the ML grabs his friend's hand holding the knife and stabs his heart. He dies in her arms. It is not known if his friend was able to drink his blood, but later he is shown helming a foundation to save children with heart defect, so it must have been done. We are lead up till the very end that his death would sever ties with her. She runs the hotel and after looking in on his empty office/room, she emerges to her party but sees him standing at the second floor balcony. They smile at each other but when they show her smiling the camera focuses on a picture of them at the beach. It that earlier scene she says that wishes to live a life with him and to explore the world together. So we can imagine their future from then on.

Experience shows that dramas often depend on a twist. So it became natural to not take the Princess's death at face value. Same when the 'night soil' lover declared that he killed her. Also sometimes the moment of unraveling the mystery is so good that you feel that you have to preen. Sometimes the detective in me is sparked and other times I fell happy to be lead along. And I have made many errors in predictions, but that is part of the joy and I'm enjoying this drama. I wasn't enamored with the ex-hand maiden story because it is too close for comfort. I don't see a way for the second story to be educational, in fighting a poor hand beyond being kinda cautionary. None of the young women, girls, had a chance.
I guess I say walk your own path and when spoilers that aren't hidden bother you, You can ask until blue in the face and they won't change. Take care.

Ep. 4 made me care for the ML.

Any other actor it would have been blink and you would miss him. But recognized him when they showed his face with the Ministers. Too short. Too short.

How long was he undercover and if so why?

Did the Sister-in-Law have a child and is it the ML's niece?

I hope that you don't mind, but I thought about your comment about the ring on his finger. That was seen leading to and during the crying scene. There are two scenes with him after that. In the last one where he meets Yu'an, they show him keeping his left hand in his pocket. And before that his left hand is partially covered by a book. There may or may not be a ring there. Two episodes before he walks with his left hand in his pocket. I think that the Chinese version puts the wife and their relationship in a more positive light. When he and the wife meet while he is playing soccer, btw not at the funeral, there are more smiles exchanged and the beer comment is there. In My Mister after the hug, in which IU hugs back, (here Zi Feng doesn't) he calls his wife where she asks for beer. It gives the feeling of him settling for number two. And in My Mister, when he is eating before he cries, we see a large photo of he, his wife and son. And the photos on his desk show his wife and son but not them together. Here, in his apartment before and when he cries, we don't see a picture of the three and before that, the pictures on his desk show none of his wife. I guess that the dramas give mixed signals. The wife parts on better terms and the ring during the crying scene hints that they are still married, but the photos on his desk show that she is not part of his life. My Mister shows that the missing ring implies that they are not married and his desk photos show her with his son, but not her and him together. The crying before the large picture of the three of them emphasizes that that is why he cries. I guess in Chinese drama, they don't want to emphasize breaking up unless it is a main point of the plot.

Zhou Yu An dramas that I like. Heart of Genius (2022) is very good but the kids stole the show. Homesick (2022) is good, but sometimes dark. Taro leaves are used in Hawaiian Lau Lau. If you've watched it you will know the connection. Begin Again (2019) AKA Happy New Year, a movie, is pretty good. She is the 2FL and I watch it every now and then to get a sweet and bittersweet feeling, Take care.

The sister was sent to a brothel by the stepmother, but she claims that she lived with an old woman in the streets. The FL's real Mother tried to protect her son who supposed to have died. So she took the drugs that addled her brain. I think that the banker who was killed may have seen the sister there. Working or living in a brothel may prevent her from marrying the General. Unless she is playing the very long game and will help the other brother.

Thank you for your comments. I loved Dating in the Kitchen . I think that in some dramas if the viewers like the story or actors they will give them a pass. I like the actress in Forbidden Flower but the schoolgirl falling falling for an older hunk made me feel uncomfortable. The other way around can feel creepy. But many love that drama. Snowfall (2024) is another that got comments about the age gap. I didn't like the SML who seemed to be the teacher's pet with the director.

I like IU in Hotel DeLuna. Her strong quirky character was pretty interesting. Thank you.

People who say that there was no romance in the original usually say that because of the age gap. I guess for them it made the drama more palatable.
Google says that the age gap of the characters in My Mister was around 18 years while the age gap in Loving Strangers is 15. Lee Sun-kyun b. 1 Mar 75 age 43 yrs old in 2018 IU b. 16 May 93 age 25 in 2018. Mark Chao b. 25 Sept 84 age 41 Zhang Zifeng b. 27 Aug 01 age 24. My Mister filming began after first script reading on 18 Dec 2017. Loving Strangers filming began in Sept 24.

The three brother struggle with romances that for two are angst stories. The main couple, despite their age difference (for some, for many?? taboo territory) has a moving and bittersweet romance. I think that the ending implies a HE in the future.

I dunno, her lover was F*cked and is in jail, she lost her job, and the person who ruined their lives did it for her husband, who now loves her.And she knows that. She is with her kid in America and by searching for schools in the US to resume her studies it means that their lives are now separate. And if she ever came back with her kid, the ending hints that she will play the second fiddle.

I hope that this drama makes viewers take a look or take another look at My Mister.
Besides this being a remake of a drama that I have fond memories of, I like Zhang Zifeng. I first noticed her in the beginning episodes of The Heart of Genius. She was in the movie Begin Again (2019) but on youtube as Happy New Year. Didn't recognize her until several years later. Bai Bai He is the FL. After The Heart of Genius I watched her in Homesick. It wasn't a happy watch. Thank you.
