So lets dissect that. It is true that the Chinese government is cracking down on what they call "effeminate men" and "sissy idols" as part of their "cultural crackdown". Just typing those words just felt so insulting that the Chinese government is saying these things about the LGBT community. So, some are interpreting this so-called cultural crackdown to mean a ban on BL and danmei. Nobody truly know where the Chinese authorities are drawing the line on what is acceptable social and cultural behavior in their eyes and what is unacceptable. Effeminate and BL don't mean the same, but in a society and culture where everything is seen through a heteronormative lens, they do get lumped together. So yeah, some things like the crackdown are real, not rumors, but does this mean it is a BL ban? That is anybody's guess.
