Yeah, you know what? the ML was just as flat and 1 dimensional lmao... I was very focused on the FL since she was the main character who was on my screen for the majority of the time, but you're right, there's not that much of a difference. They're both not very well written as characters.

No no, I don't believe that her lack of personality had anything to do with her melancholy. I think you can be melancholic and sad and still have a personality, and she didn't :/ a good example of this is the kdrama We're All Trying Here where almost every character is deeply melancholic but they all have distinct personalities and depth. And they're all very lovable and even I as a viewer cared about them and understood why the other characters cared about them as well. Meanwhile, on this drama, I felt like the FL here had no depth, she only had a sad backstory and that's it. It's almost like when the writers created her character, they just decided on "sad and pretty" without adding any complexity or any actual distinct traits that make her her own person.
and by "a lack of life" I didn't mean a lack of enthusiasm (though I understand why you might think I meant that) I meant a lack of human complexity (aka what separates a realistic character from a 1 dimensional character)
edit: to make it even clearer, my criticism is from a writing perspective. I'm criticizing the writers for creating a flat character and putting no effort into it, I'm not criticizing the character as a person, because I don't even think she was written well enough to be dissected the way you would dissect a complex and realistic character..
this had a really sweet and comforting vibe. I loved the ml's little sister, she was the most interesting lively (yes lively, also lovely but I mean lively) character. Her obsession with that guy was cute I was kinda rooting for them but it's a good thing they didn't end up together, small age gaps are more serious for younger people.
I love the sisterhood between the mother and the aunt!
Lee Jang Woo !!!!!! <3 this character was endearingly annoying and I loved him. I love the actor too.
the leads are both visually very pretty and ML's acting was nice.
The FL tho... *ahem* (skip this part if she means a lot to you) her character was incredibly bland, boring, unseasoned and unflavored. It made no sense for everyone to be in love with her, she didn't have a single personality trait and idk if it's an issue with the writing or the actress but whyy was sheee just standing there for 90% of the time omg like make a face, show an emotion, do something.. the only time she showed some sort of personality was when she cried lol (I'll give the actress credit for that) and the lack of life in her just made it really hard for me to care about her or her story
shoutout to everyone else tho, the entire cast was great and the rest of the characters are very warm and likeable
I think this started out around a 9-10/10 for me but then it kept going down unfortunately. I ended up giving it a 8.5/10 which is definitely a good rating imo but it could've been much higher if not for the fact that the last 7-8 episodes were kinda uninteresting (to me at least)
edit: this doesn't negate the fact that the general concept of this drama is SUPER interesting and the main character is probably one of my favorite FL's of all time!!
a little dump for my thoughts: (disclaimer: a twenty-something sounding like she's 70 for some reason lol)
I just finished ep12 and I might be dropping this, it seems like it's not my cup of tea.. plus I heard the adult plotline will only happen when there's a few eps left which means this is predominantly a teenage romance, and I personally think teenage romances don't easily impress adult viewers, the only time I've seen a really excellent take on teenage romance was with Our Generation (but surprisingly not a lot of people like that drama!)
I don't really have any actual criticism for this, except maybe the excessive use of cliche tropes?? I feel like this combines a bunch of tropes I read on wattpad when I was 13, which is not necessarily a bad thing, it just means it really IS aimed at a really young audience (plus there's nothing wrong with a few clichés, no matter what age the intended audience is)
if you're liking this drama so far, I hope you keep enjoying it, have fun guys
Chinese writers love this coughing up blood trope. In my forty decades on earth I have never seen blood coughing…
lmaaoo I was just thinking about that too while watching ep30 it's so silly but I don't think I mind it that much it kinda adds to the charm of cdramas 🤣
i do have but the novel is not used for the drama so it’s useless to read it
in your own personal opinion, how toxic did you think the ML was in the script? give a rating out of /10 🤣 I don't want any actual content spoilers but I am curious about this
I've only seen Bai Lu on kunning palace (probably my fav cdrama) before this, and despite loving that drama and her character, I don't think that there was enough room for her to show off her acting abilities. Because now I'm really impressed by her acting on this, she's doing amazing whoa and she's beautiful too
And I don't know what you mean by "desert"....
