1 episode in and i was like wow that was fast. 20 episodes in and im like why on earth am i still here? then i realised this drama is kinda built like a vertical drama lmaoooo. just with an extraordinarily high budget.
like try imagining if the aspect ratio was 9:16, view this as those vertical dramas you randomly stumble into on tiktok, the ones with random plot progression that gets you scratching your head like lmao what was that? yeah that's this whole thing, then you'll somehow forgive the lightning speed pace and awful storytelling (storytelling, who is she?)
also, i know im being disrespectful to vertical dramas here bcz man, i know some of them has top tier plots and storytelling too. so yeah, this one is just whack. i feel bad bcz the actors did so good but the weird cuts and zooms just reminds me even more of the cheap short dramas and it makes everything funny somehow π€£π€£I'll still prob finish it bcz like every vertical drama i stumble into i just end up being roped into finishing it cz im curious what happens at the end yk lol
Hey I saw someone also had translated the movie, but since I also worked on the raw files dropped off to me yesterday…
LJ apparently has been wonky lately :( but I've updated more links on the LJ, got a new ver out that's more stable on gdrive, and it's now available here too: https://dai.ly/xa87b4w (high chance that dlymxn will be ta/ken down soon tho so watch while you can ig)
Hey I saw someone also had translated the movie, but since I also worked on the raw files dropped off to me yesterday I thought I should still just post it to thank them for it! Encoding it took longer than expected huhu so I could only post it now. So here's an alternative sub if anyone need itπ
I loved this show but snickered at the βtwo music videosβ comment, like your not wrong, that is so valid π€£π€£πππ…
I agreeee I see it XD
Though I do still have beef with the storytelling XD Bcs sometimes it's like what character am I watching rn XQS or XMM? It's like, okay I get it, XMM is v immersed in the XQS character so he is basically moving on autopilot, but at the same time we don't see him acknowledge it as XMM, I guess. It does happen in the beginning but after that it wasn't well executed if intended. That's why for me I thought it need more instances of the isekai acknowledgement if they wanted to keep reminding us that we are watching XMM as XQS. The sparsity of it on the latter half created that confusing feeling for me I guess, as it feels like oh so we're supposed to be watching XQS now and no longer 'XMM as XQS' since he's so immersed, right? Nice, okay so, if we are watching XQS, then they should completely disregard the system, his knowledge of future events, etc., and let us be properly immersed in XQS's jianghu, right? (which is basically largely made up of his relationship with his allies/enemies, but we didn't get that) Like yes, XMM is just being forced into the plot and take up the mantle of XQS, but the viewers don't have to be reminded of that with the random sprinkles of isekai convo then :/ That killed the viewers' (mine rly hehe) immersion into XQS's choices lul like oh so it's still you XMM? lmao what was that little chuuni moment you had there ksksksks
I do think the first half of the show excelled in the 'XMM as XQS' portion and then when they were trying to move into the 'this is XQS' portion towards the end, they didn't execute the storytelling well in my opinion
But yknow what, I guess that is what it is then, it's like an MC syndrome novel come to life XDD Now that I think of it, the storytelling is rly like the isekai shounen chuuni genres lolol So yes, I'll just see it as journey of the b-grade author stuck in a chuuni wuxia legend XDDD
As a big chengyi fan, who am i kidding??? As much as I love cheng yi dramas, this one was kinda ass broooo.
So ass im gonna go on a crazy long rant here
Absolute potential thrown off the cliff right after the first arc of his parents death. There's obviously too much things they wanted to do but they did not achieve any of those like omg that's crazyyy
Tropes they wanted:
1. OP protag journey to becoming a legend > for some reason every master just gives their powers to him without even getting to know him first lmao also there rly was no necessity to nerf him in the beginning if his body subconsciously remembers his training or wtv
2. Cool villain that mc can relate to, to ensure fighting them later becomes a conflicting thing to do > Villains are there but mc didn't even get to care for their story. They gave liu suifeng a good background but it concluded with a, oh ok that's it for viewers and for liu sifeng too. So imagine what it does to mc? That's right, absolutely nothing. Also, what was even the point of making Li Chenzhou look like him that is so random, like it doesn't even matter to the plot bro im so confused they could've used the doppelganger trope so much better too and don't even get me started on li chenzhou ugh like they managed to make the supposed villain actually nice only to give him like 5 seconds of background story. They rly shouldve infused more of his history into the plot or at least whenever they were talking about the past or something.
3. Epic fight scenes > damn the first parts was amazing esp when he broke the damn sword to pieces to throw at the enemy that was INSANE i can still recall it after finishing the drama. Then it all became boring after his parents' death. It's like they shoved all the good stuff at the beginning and then they didn't know how to keep going so it all just became pretty close-up shots and weird fps slowmo shots at the end like i had the urge to skip a lot of the fights bro, because it did barely anything to the plot development. It was all just, mc discover something, villain also discover something, they go there, fight, done or someone dies for impact, predictable. We want fight scenes that are woven into the plot. Like the beginning, quishui accidental encounter with the fishing demon guy (i dont remember his name) was perfect, it adds to his character, lets the viewer see the plot move, rather than being shoved around by whatever is necessary to justify the confrontation with the next villain.
3. Multiple legendary and powerful characters that teaches the mc meaning of jianghu > multiple characters β teaches the mc, well if you count them just randomly giving his powers the moment he shows a sliver of compassion before immediately dying after so he feels a sense of regret or wtv, teaching, then yes. I am so upset like this couldve been amazing like how blood of youth handled multiple strong characters yk, like u actually get to learn of the characters gradually then meet them and see how their view of life conflicts or matches with mc and that determines their interactions going forward. But nah, so hey yall heard about this character, they live here, the plot is telling us to get clues there so let's go there, mc goes, fight for the character, gets their power and we're on to the next clue. They only did this well with Crazy Yan, seee like they sprinkled him throughout the show, so when bro actually dies im upset. But even then his death was just welp, he ded. Mc didn't find out and his sister didn't get closure and all. It wasn't even a necessary-to-the-plot death bcz it didn't even impact anyone lol. They just wanted to close his paycheck lmao
4. MC strong friendships and relationships > friendships here are alright ig but they're also literally just there to be npcs for the mc. They barely have any personality lol everyone's personality just ends up being we'll serve Lao Da until we die. If i was mc i would be so uncomfortable like all my friends are just there for me because they're indebted to me like um weird dynamic but sure. Relationships ugh, i have to be honest i hate how they wrote Tang Fang. They nerfed her when they want mc to save her which is all the time and then turned her into a whining brat whenever she interacts with mc. Its so unlikeable i actually had to skip it sometimes AND SKIPPING IT DIDN'T MAKE ME CONFUSED BY WHATEVER HAPPENED NEXT BECAUSE IT WAS UNNECESSARY TO THE PLOT AS USUAL. I know they obv want us to think mc has a soft spot for her and maybe kinda like her if it was the right timing, but nahh the chemistry was not there lol. I'd say chengzhou/shirong carried much better and even suifeng/mingzhu master/servant disciple trope was executed much better. Subtle but strong emotions yk.
5. Interesting plot > bro i had so much hope with the whole transmigration aspect. If you're still reading and is going to watch for that, don't really bother. It's barely, no, it's not there. It was unnecessary also. They could've just made mc grow up spoiled and learn jianghu the hard way. They just wanted a reason to spawn a 17y/o (maybe) with "no martial" into the jianghu so he can understand what it really means or wtv. And a surprise villain that knows his every move, which is something they could achieve differently ugh.
All in all a lot of things were so unnecessary. And it made the latter half of the show feel so damn cheap and goofy.
And let me just say, having one random "let's sing a song to commemorate our brotherhood together" scene in a drama is one too many, but this drama HAS TWO. Twooooo bro. I hope that tells you how the whole show is like
