Too many red flags. Very disappointing.
I’ve watched some of Esther’s previous work so when I saw YouTube recommended SOLB to me I was ecstatic. At first the plot seemed promising, I was under the impression that I was in for another “Rich boy falls for small town girl” trope; not original, but worth a watch just to see. It was not.Let’s start with the basis of the plot:
The ML’s brother confessed to the FL, she rejected him so he drank too much and had a drowning accident. How does the ML handle the situation when he finds out? He sleeps with the FL under the guise of loving her and leaves her the next morning with a shabby note to avenge his brother. This part completely blew my mind. Logic and communication left the chat starting from this episode. My impression during that episode was “Oh I see, there’s no way this is the ML, the real ML hasn’t appeared yet. They will definitely NOT make the man who used/ even physically abused her the love interest”. I was quickly proven wrong. They did exactly that. I watched till the end to see if they were just joking but they were in fact very serious.
My final thoughts:
This drama is riddled with scenes of physical and emotional abuse towards most of the female character(s) yet it is the women that do the apologizing and self work. If this was supposed to make me believe in love it didn’t. The only thing I did after painstakingly finishing this drama was do a research on why some Lakorns glorify misogyny and domestic abuse towards women. Ladies, or even young girls that are watching this drama, none of what was depicted in this drama is an accurate portrayal of what a healthy relationship looks like. Go ahead and skip this one.

Give it a watch, it might be worth your time.
I’m all about the high speed chase when it comes to romance dramas I don’t usually do slow burns, so I passed on this drama once or twice before. Until one day I was on YouTube casually browsing when I fell victim to those outrageously titled C-Drama clips and decided to give “My Dear Guardian” a try despite the bad reviews. I’m so glad I decided to watch it.Although MDG is 40 episodes, I’m not mad at it at all. I think Xia Chu and Mu Ze had a lot to work on in terms of their professional careers and healing from their past. The pacing made sense to me. I was on the edge of my seat every episode while watching their love quietly blossom.
On Xia Chu’s personality: She’s incredibly smart, bubbly and energetic. I would liken her personality/tone to that of the cute characters that Esther Yu, Zhao Lusi, or Dilraba Dilmurat played in their past work. If those type of characters are not your favorite then you might not like Xia Chu but I still say give it a try.
As with any dramas there was a little bit of propaganda here and there but none that had me wanting to stop watching. After all this is a medical/military drama so I expected no less.
The OST is top tier, there are so many good songs to add to your playlist. Overall this was the perfect adult romance to watch when you want a break from the craziness the drama world has to offer.
P.S. iykyk I hope those figurines of Mu Ze and Xia Chu are on sale I need them ASAP.
