it looks like zhuang shiyang's mask is starting to slip a bit (i'm watching the scene in the ancestral hall... hanyan's father is so shady making up excuses to delay her hair pinning ceremony grrr

in short: pei dafu is a corrupted official/ringleader of the "zuohang gang" (full of other corrupt officials) and they're searching for his son because he might have a clue as to where his father hid away all his stolen riches

sooo worth it! the characters all feel so fleshed out, there's not over-the-top cliches, and they really let the FL shine. extra bonus (in my eyes) is the gorgeous cinematography, sets, and ming dynasty costumes! you can tell that the cast & crew took great care with this drama

yeah i think the father is the major villain because there are hints that he poisoned his father + caused the death of the eldest daughter (the one who married yunxi)

the song they have playing in hanyan and her mom's scenes make me so emo 😭 i love that they got two women to sing in a call and response way like they're talking to/about each other 😭 and then towards the end of the song they're singing TOGETHER...... i need it on spotify asap so i can cry to it whenever i want

i get you! it helps that yunxi's character doesn't really emote much so i'm not bothered by it. and in the most inoffensive way possible, i'm glad he's the ML because i think he's the perfect actor that lets dudu shine in this drama haha

drama!hanyan is even more impressive to me because she's learning and growing in her one life — no magical redos, no past experience, just simply doing her best after what she's been through in danzhou
