imo it's a reference to the classic literary motif of a double/doppelgänger (usually explored in gothic works) — in this case, XFF becomes JL's double (a sort of "identity theft") after a pivotal moment in both of their lives. the doubling motif is carried on throughout the drama, especially with XFF's fight for justice and the many conflicts of good vs evil in the narrative
