Finally got to catch Lee Seung Gi on screen again. I really enjoyed this!
The storyline is okay, but it's a different Journey to the West story. Still, I love all the cast and their acting. It was good to see some familiar faces, and I'm missing them already.
Was really excited for season 2, because season 1 was so good! I prefer season 1 as the middle part was draggy and the best part in season 1 (the cute and romantic scenes) was absent here as it was mainly about court politics.
It's a cute show, but there's quite a bit of loopholes as some parts don't make sense to me and certain scenes were too rushed. But the leads are cute together.
I've waited a long time for this drama to come out and I'm really glad I did. I had expectations the moment I saw the poster and the main leads (Deng Lun and Yang Zi) but AOL exceeded them.
I'll admit that I had a few things to get used to in the first few episodes. Otherwise, everything else was really amazing - the cast, CGI effects, cinematography and storyline. This is exactly my cup of tea! The ending also wraps everything up nicely and I really like how when Xu Feng was searching for Jin Mi, he reconciled with Run Yu. It felt so good seeing Xu Feng being his nice, kind self.
My only complain is that I had hoped for more scenes between Jin Mi & Xu Feng, both throughout the drama and the ending (especially the ending!). They didn't have much scenes together in the second half of the drama and they had just reconciled (for a night) before Jin Mi dies. So, I was really expecting for more than a few moments of just Xu Feng & Jin Mi moments at the end. The child they had was assuring, I guess, that they got their happily ever after but... their interaction at the every end was only with the child, not each other, since they've become parents. I get it, but they didn't even say a line to each other. So that made the romantic in me disappointed.
Nevertheless, Deng Lun and Yang Zi portrayed their characters well. It's hard to say goodbye to Xu Feng, Jin Mi and the rest. I'll miss them.
I really enjoyed this movie. I like the interaction between the main characters, as well as the funny and touching scenes. Over all, just the whole mood and setting of the movie.
I know the ending's expected but it was still hard to accept. Tae Jin was someone so good and kind, which made me really hoped for a happy ending. But it was also his eventual acceptance of his death and his letting go that made the movie much more special. That, and his love and dedication to Hyun Ji (especially when he presented the house to her). I like Jang Soo too, and I liked him more when the movie revealed why he was so keen on minding his own business.
Between comedy and the main plot, it was really amazing how both characters are so well-developed in 98 minutes.
This drama took me on an emotional ride. Rather than the plot, what I love more is the complexity of the main characters' personalities, especially Charmaine Sheh's character. Each time a layer is revealed, I can't help but be awed.
The relationship between the characters was another element that I loved, especially the one between the first empress (Lady Fuca) and Ying Luo. Personally, I've never come across a "good" empress in Chinese period dramas, this empress really won me over. Her goodness and the tight bond she had with Ying Luo, was the best part of the drama.
Speaking of the Fuca family, I really love Fu Heng and Ying Luo as a pair. They were so good together. I really dislike it when the second male lead and the female lead are broken up, when 1. they already have a relationship, 2. the SML is not a jerk and 3. circumstances forces one of them to give up the relationship to protect the other party. This totally happened for Fu Heng and Ying Luo. This made it hard for me to continue watching for awhile. But subsequent episodes, especially the last one, what Fu Heng and Ying Luo had bittersweet. It wasn't the ending I wanted, but it wrapped everything up nicely as it showed me how they continued to love each other in their own way.
With that said, I can't deny that the peculiar relationship Ying Luo had with the emperor was quite adorable. If only because the emperor accepted Ying Luo for who she is and didn't force her personality to change, in order to conform with the rules for concubines. Still, I don't like the emperor for breaking Fu Heng and Ying Luo.
Starting watching this because of Park Seo Joon, but Park Min Young's character also grew on me. There are some funny scenes but there isn't much character development. The closest thing would be seeing the different layers of Young Joon's personality, starting from the middle of the drama.
I'll admit: I was first drawn to this drama because of Ruan Jing Tian, then the plot. I love the story, the cast and the costumes are really pretty.
However as much as I'd love to give it a 10/10, there were some parts that didn't make sense to me, asides from abrupt transitions between certain scenes.
1. The part of the drama (Fu Yao being the girl with the five-coloured stone) that I had anticipated the most about was a disappointment. Maybe I was looking forward to a battle of some sorts but... it's definitely not what I saw. Just a few minutes of internal struggles and Fu Yao managed to save the world and herself.
Actually, the actions are okay but the execution was weird. For one, Fu Yao had stabbed and slashed Wu Ji so many times, it's amazing that (its not that I want him dead but) he's still alive even after enduring the harsh punishment belt out by his mentor.
I still can't believe that the "solution" to Fu Yao's dilemma was so... short-lived. It was an anti-climax, really.
2. In the last few episodes, Wu Ji became so weak and the dialogues that took place were far too long-winded. It felt like Wu Ji became someone else. I mean, I love how even though he's perfect, he still has his flaws. But those last few episodes were starting to take it too far.
The ending was weird also because there was no updates about the couple's friends who came to help them, and none about them being aware of Xiao Qi's death.
3. I understand that despite being a heroine, Fu Yao needs saving some times. It's perfectly okay to be saved by Wu Ji because at the end of the day, she's the female. But I didn't see much of her role as a heroine in the latter half of the drama. Where's her kickass wu gong that she obtained from the secret manual when she fell into the pond/lake in the beginning?
I only saw her having a swipe at the villain and Wuji at the last episode. That definitely wasn't her kickass wu gong.
Words cannot describe how brilliant this drama is. It was beautiful, but tragic. The characters came to live by the actors & actresses who played them.
I was preparing myself for a sad ending, but I guess you could never be totally prepared for that. I had also hoped there'd be a reunion for Eugene & Ae-Sin at the end. But I guess, that only made Eugene's ending speech much more meaningful and bittersweet.
I'm really grateful we got to watch such a brilliant drama. I just really miss those characters.
why is it bittersweet?is it a they die and get reincarnated in the future type ending?
The ending is actually quite open to interpretation, because everyone is alive and well at the very last scene. So you could take it as the female lead getting her wish.
But then, it's weird because no one remembers her other than Chi Yu. Not only that, some of the characters were portrayed to be living another type of life. It almost feels like an alternate world or something. Also, if I recall correctly, Mo Er saw the flying fish which she saw in her dreams (the part where she almost lost her life)? So it's really up to you to interpret it.
It took a while for me to get used to the characters, especially the female lead (Xu Yong Xin). I just didn't understand why Yong Xin was portrayed to be those "naive", dumb FL. It was only when Yu Xuan's identity was exposed did Yong Xin lose those traits.
Although the drama is okay overall, there are some things I want to comment on. 1. Some transitions between scenes & events are awkward, especially after Zheng Yu Wen went missing and then Zheng Da Wei just suddenly disappears.
2. Maybe the producers were going for the whole friendship-between-the-leads-till-the-last-episode, but didn't they kiss when they were in uni? So it didn't really make sense for them to still remain as friends AND for Yong Xin to be so "clueless" when Du Ya Xiu finally confessed to her in the last episode.
3. Yu Xuan liking Xu Yong Yi. The last time I saw them in a scene together was when they were accidentally locked inside the P.E. equipment room... and it wasn't a lovey-dovey scene. So how did they end up getting married? Like, shouldn't there be some sort of progress before a wedding? (I don't see Yong Xin & Ya Xiu progressing).
4. Da Wei "likes" Yong Xin, but he didn't actually try to woo her or anything. I thought he was gonna do it after Yong Xin rejected his brother, but he did nothing. Yet when he came back 12 years later, he talked as if he did...
5. The dubbing for Da Wei is really weird.

Even though it took time, I really like Ya Xiu. I like him even more after watching the last episode. It's just a pity that the last few episodes did not focus on a further development of Ya Xiu & Yong Xin's relationship.
