ep27
PeiYi is so devastatingly pretty in pale blue, pinks, embroidery and lace.
And HuaiJin is beyond attractive in the simple blue gown and boots, with the sleeves rolled up to show his hands and forearms.
Be still my beating heart.

And yet, what is this distraction? What is in the bundles her colleagues brought at the last minute? Is she hiding her sword under that dress? What did HuaiJin stock the household with?

watching this after watching hospital playlist just shows how good hospital playlist was 😭
Totally agree @PizzaKim. What a big difference a few years makes.

Except for the superexceptional camerawork, the really funny classical ensemble physical comedy and the use of the hospital as a character itself, this lacks the whole post-2018 fusion-pizzazz. Or to put it another way, this show has all the glory of the super-polished precision of the creative kdrama cast-and-crew, except for the leads as written. A misuse of the talents of Seo Hyun Jin and YYS, only redeemed by the context of the show.

Ok. I love this show, watching it for the first time.
But I really need to rant a tiny.

The sort of role which Seo Hyun Jin playsis annoying me more than usual. I dont know why.

A damaged, orphaned woman who only cares about being acknowledged by someone in authority over her.
Classic absent Dad syndrome?
When she does fall in love with a non-dad-type-guy, she consistently, over and over , and over again lies about her desires -- with a winsome smile on her face.
She skips like a ten year old when she is happy, and swings her hair from side to side.

We are supposed to see the young girl inside of us who feels validated by love.
But also identify with a woman who needs recognition through a career.
But the role gets stuck in conflict over the two.
And when stuck in conflict she behaves like a little, perky only semi-verbal child.

And she lies and lies reflexively.

Thank goodness for these comment sections. Only here can I express how crazy this sort of role makes me.

Xing yue plays such a soft and gentle ML its so different from his other roles and he absolutely killed it im…
The recent costume cdrama with Hou Ming Hao, Glory, for all its weirdness, has an addictive ML gentle lover vs fierce FL business magnate set up. HMH is magic that way, no matter the show, he doesnt do red flag.

We are told that the Emperor had 4 sons, and 15 daughters! There can be more, but like FL's friend who died in…
Oh, right. But we dont see the Consorts or Talents having any family life with their kids and maids, the way we do in some other cdramas. That was my point. We are only seeing those who live desperately at the outskirts of the Emperor's court. Sad.

Definitely not a harem theme.

Each of the concubines had their own palace and their own little court with attendants. They didnt have alliances, since they all compete for the favor of the Big Daddy, the Emperor.

For all of them their physical beauty, creative entertainment talents and allure were their only possessions, their all. They are lonely, obsessed with obtaining the favor of one man. Their lives were empty, as were their palaces.

In this story they dont even seem to have many children (which is the whole point of the arrangement?). I am still getting very tidy modern allegory vibrations.

is this any good ? i watched first 4 episodes and it is very slow
For me I only became engaged after the first 4. The couple dynamic is a fresh twist; Bai Lu's character is not new but Wang XingYue as a super-rational Watson to her Sherlock grows into something more romantic than expected. The visuals are wonderful. I found the cases affecting, pitiable, magnificent, curious etc and they arent predictably solved in one episode. The variety of crimes is a little head-snapping -- medical, 'magical', crimes of passion, family, greed and horrific abuse . As a wuxia fan the duels lightened some segments well.
However, so far more tears than kisses, all around. Honestly, if you like Sir Conan Doyle (only occasional mild romance but lots of tension, madness and curiousities), then it is more likely that you will like Jadewind.

So this drama is literally shaping men to be the ultimate scumbags (ofc except very few) and women to be either…
I remember watching Flourished Peony where the complaint of viewers was that it was a fantasy to think that women had any agency in the Tang especially palace women.

Apart from PeiYi the picture here is probably much closer to historical reality. I really need all the fantasy elements to stand against it, as I hear you saying. Intelligent women who have the rare fortune to have resources enough to have some control over their lives keep a lower profile than those who become victims, as far as the historical record goes.

Ep23
I loved the hallucination-battle of PeiYi against 2 (or3?) demonic forces. I loved that the rational ML shows up to break the illusion. Love that nerd dynamic.

As in many of my favorite dramas the secondary couples reflect or refract the main couples dynamic -- possibly mainly to give us something to talk about?

I am still stuck on Ying and PeiYu. Their close relationship and its dynamics are a form of love and based on a childhood friend. It is a tragic story, distanced where in kdrama the same dynamic would be done with over-the-top comedy.

And it does make you think about the main couple.

Or they used dramatic license? Art doesn’t always follow life.
refraction or reflection, fusion-historical is a recognizeable form where to parallelscurrent issues add interest to stories of the past. Baby-farming is an issue for other countries in the developed world now, while obviously in this Tang version it is wrapped up in geomancy and astrology and worries about financial fortunes. A lovely tangle.

Ep1 cont.
Dr. SeoJong charges off on a solitary hike while sporting casts over fractures from the car accident.

She is working out her guilt over having discussed sensitive topics with Dr.Moon while he was drunkenly driving her home.

Of course, he proposed to her while driving. But she isnt angry. oh no. She is guilty and self-punishing and havung a hard time expressing her grief.

Until, of course! she loses her footing and rolls down the hill injuring herself. Only then all alone, does she cry.

Yet another willful and impulsive FL. In the gendered world of Korean rom-com, she couldnt be independent and great without being a reckless idiot, right?

People who complained about the kiss on Ep 1 probably are just slow so they don’t get it. The “I want to sleep…
Maybe you are right, I just saw it for the first time. I thought it was gross.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DECADE MAKES
Ep1
the famous kiss in the storeroom. I had heard of it but had no idea it was so abrupt. No hesitation and actual shock on the FL's face when he pushes her against some shelving and kisses her.

Not even a moment of eye contact, not even a suggestion of her being equally eager.

It wouldnt play today. The rhythm would be different. The kiss would not interrupt a scene of her recovering from being bullied by her superior.

He would be showing underrstanding, not making another demand on her.
A forced kiss isnt considered as consoling, nor as a mutual attraction event.
Not now.

definitely ancient world where daughters-in-law can be maltreated to such a vicious extent. Anyone out here know about the rights of the parents of the wife? No legal recourse?

definite reflections of baby-farming in RL. They must have the same problem in China or nearby where children obtained in illegal ways are sold to childless couples?
