This definitely felt like a longer script cut up to fit into a vertical drama.
This definitely felt like a longer script cut up to fit into a vertical drama. An inordinately long intro and credits means that at least 3 mins is shaved off from ea 18min ep., so 20 eps x +-15 mins ea = 5hrs watchtime.
Transitions between episodes were often wildly confusing, at least momentarily. However the writer/director knows what she is doing -- the scenography is brilliant, and the whole thing is luscious enough to keep you watching until the end.
The early, steamy, but ultimately minor bondage scenes reflect the political situation to begin with in the years of the early Chinese Civil War. She struggles at the pinnacle of power and wealth, while he, dispossessed, stoically endures humiliations,
It actually helps that this is one of those revolutionary young love plots, so lots of sex, which becomes entirely innocent once the revolution acometh, is normal as part of the trope.
The two main actors bear watching. The astoundingly beautiful FL, Hu Yi Yao, has good skills, has been working hard and has 7 shows lined up in the pipeline. Most of them appear to be 45min-ers, although up until now she has been stuck in verticals.
The ML, Hao Fu Shen, also a beauty, has been a bit sidelined since a relationship scandal when he was younger, although he initially started off in 45-ers. I havent seen him in anything else besides BBS, but wish him well.
This was fun, but beware, you might find it annoying if you care about continuity. The director Chen Wei Qun definitely deserves a chance at bigger pieces so be nice if you can. This would have been a pretty good movie. As a vertical it is overindulgent in the sensual aspects of cinematography: fashions, interior sets, soundtrack (cello theme!) were all really svelte.
