On another point, I know we hate the kidnapper and all, but we can't deny how amazing the actor was. I really…
For me he acted so well (I read he's a theater actor like Yoo Yeon Seok) that I actually felt pity and heartache for his plight despite his deranged mind. I didn't miss that look of pain in his eyes when he saw Hee Joo reunited with fake Sa Eon in Episode 11. It's like here he knew yet again that his life would be ending up in the same way as it did in the past 2 decades-with nothing but misery-while his impostor got the happy life which he (real Sa Eon) thought he (fake Sa Eon) didn't deserve because the latter was living the life that was supposed to be his (being the real Sa Eon). We all know he is a murderer but that's how his brain was wired since birth (nature) and the family background was not exactly a healthy and well-balanced environment for a child to grow up in (nurture). His grandfather was sick. His mother was sick. His father had anger management issues. I love good villains like Jang Han Seok & Myung Hee (Vincenzo), Young Shim & Jae Min (Queen Maker), Jang Dae Hee (Itaewon Class), etc because they were just so evil for evil's sake. Those monsters were motivated purely by greed and lust for power and I truly enjoyed watching them go head to head with the protagonists. But here in WTPR, I felt only sadness for the real Sa Eon's plight. His backstory and acting made him such a tragic and pitiful character. I actually hate his parents and grandfather more.
I'm honestly so surprised this comment keeps coming up because we are not dealing with an emotionally well adjusted…
I didn't expect Sa Eon to learn any language at all because from the very get go, he shot down any initiative or effort from his wife to reach out and connect with him. He didn't want to get attached to her in the early years of their marriage. He was very clear to her in the beginning that he didn't want her to expect anything from their marriage, like develop feelings for him and such. So for him to exert even more effort to communicate to her in that way is already going out of his way for her. He needed to keep up with his douche bag husband act. That is, until she got abducted.
This is true. And what's worse is, there is no cure for Antisocial Personality Disorder in real life. I took Clinical Psychology for a couple of years for postgrad and this is the heartbreaking reality. Therapy is ineffective for these people because they are incapable of feeling empathy towards others so there is no remorse. That's just how they are wired.
Why shouldn’t viewers expect much from the last episode of a drama?
Jdramas are very good at condensing their series to 9-11 episodes. It doesn't seem to work well in Kdramas, except of course if you have a very simple plot like Soundtrack #1. I honestly want to see an ending that makes the viewers feel like the happily ever after is truly earned and neither rushed nor open ended.
Why shouldn’t viewers expect much from the last episode of a drama?
Yeah Episode 11 was poorly done. This was the reason why I would have wanted the drama to extend to like 2 episodes to have a proper build up to the finale. I would have preferred a much longer search for Hee Joo (and make the relief and joy of seeing her alive well-earned) and for the director actually show us what happened to Sa Eon after that gunshot. Like what the heck was that sudden time jump?! They should have ended this episode with finding Hee Joo or seeing Sa Eon getting shot or something...
Yeah I was right that already had feelings for each other since they were children 🥹 Although I do believe…
Hmmm yeah it probably was? Maybe she piqued his interest then but found comfort in her presence when he saw her through the window. And then his feelings grew deeper as the years passed.
The scar on Heejoo’s knee is both a scary memory with the dog and a precious memory because that’s when she…
Yeah I was right that already had feelings for each other since they were children 🥹 Although I do believe Sa Eon fell for her first when he saw her do the sign language of "it will be okay" or something like that through her window. Even before that revelation in her mind in Episode 11, when that scene first came out earlier in the drama, she had a small smile on her face when he gave her a piggy back ride which indicated when she started liking him (or crushing on him).
