Disappointment but not surprising
Disappointing, but that's not a surprise given how I am disappointed with almost all of the gmmtv releases.
These people are writing shows with the pairs in mind and make the characters do stuff that will please the fans/keep the pair together rather than actually writing a story and have the actors adapt to the character. Like this is lowkey very mockery atp. Would this story have gone this way if it was not a beloved pair acting in it?
The premise was lowkey interesting and the show had a little spark the first few episodes. A bratty singer being a serious CEO's sugar baby. Their dynamics were fun, especially their first night when it felt like Key had the upper hand. The no kiss rule and all were very good. But we ruin it all by having Chan automatically fall in love with Key by episode 5. Does gmmtv know that they don't have to have the pairs get together and have lovey dovey episodes to have a good show? They should have taken time to explore Chan and Key's chemistry, have Chan resist for long have a long awaited kiss.
The Jay-Chan-Key dynamic was supposed to do a lot but it was a nothing burger. Key and Jay's convos during the first few episodes were interesting. They could have built on that but we extinguish that fire way early.
Jay as a character did not do much. Many seem to think that she was a better developed character but I don't see anything from her. Her reason for ghosting Chan was so weak. Like its 2026, you could have told her your situation instead of disappearing. She did not have any actual plan to get Chan back.
When I saw it was Film who was playing this role I was so excited, I thought gmmtv was actually trying something new. One of my problems with this fixed pairing is that I feel like it limits the actors to only having work with their partner and only doing romance heavy shows. Film is one my faves way before pluto so I was excited to see her. But alas, it was a disappointment. Them bringing in Namtan was the laziest decision ever. It's like they didn't know what to do with Jay after Chan rejects her so they were like 'Hey!, let's bring the partner of the actress, people will eat it up'...and quite frankly many ppl did eat it up. Ellie as a character would not have been pushed so much if it wasn't played by Namtan (I love Namtan as an actress btw). It all comes back to my first point of them writing characters to please the ship.
Back to ChanKey, their past connection was so unnecessary. They tried to shed some light on mental illness with Key's trauma but ultimately they can't make a proper story out of that in 10 eps. This show could have done without it.
Both Chan and Key's personality changed completely once they got together (just like every other gl). They both just became lovey dovey.
The mother plotline was dragged for so long but the resolution of their conflict wasn't even shown, it was just a mention. Why bother introducing plotlines if you don't know how to finish them?
The acting was amazing but I don't even have to mention that.
Its such a loss for me cause I love Fon's aesthetics, music and physical stylization of the characters (which a lot of other directors miss) but her scripts are so horrible and repetitive.
(honestly im surprised that the audience hated this show. the things they hate abt this show is the same things i hate abt many beloved gls, like US for example. The issues in this show are present in almost every gl. in US too, the story is repetitive and there isn't much of a plot. The initial conflict of her character having a crush on her brother's gf is solved quickly and the rest of the series has basically nothing. i wonder why ppl hate this and girl rules specifically. maybe its cause there is moments where the leads explore beyond their pairs?)
