Good luck with your studies! Study hard! :) I'm not a native speaker either, just took Chinese classes through all of college, but sadly still not enough to understand dramas fully though. (My college only taught simplified chinese, but my sister took classes too and her college only taught traditional. I feel, as you get used to it, for most common characters you can still pick out between the two (but not always) since traditional does have lots more strokes to some characters.) Easier to go from trad to simplified than other way around though.

Most of the mainland Chinese dramas/shows/bts use simplified characters (like L&R). However, the Taiwanese dramas/shows still use traditional subs (i.e. recent ones like: Someday or One Day, Lost Romance).
