Recommended — only if unhinged rom-com nonsense is your thing.
(I'm only giving this positive feedback because I have watched it long back. If I have watched it for the first time now, I'm not sure this would have been my review)
My Girlfriend Is an Alien was actually my first ever Chinese drama — and my first drama in general — so I know I’m probably biased. Back then, I absolutely LOVED it. I remember finishing it in two days because I just couldn’t stop watching.
Looking back now, I can admit it’s kind of funnily unhinged. The premise is weird, dramatic, and sometimes ridiculous, but when it works, it really works. From what I remember, the story was entertaining, light, and easy to binge. It doesn’t try to be deep or extremely logical — it exists to make you laugh, swoon, and enjoy the ride.
The show depends heavily on the main couple: the cold, distant boss and the chaotic, perverted alien girl. And honestly? They carry it. I really liked the female lead — she’s cute, silly, shameless, and very lovable. The chemistry between the leads felt natural and fun, and the actors did a good job making the romance believable. Compared to some stiff performances you sometimes see, this felt refreshing.
If I had to complain, I’d say the last few episodes started to feel a bit repetitive. But for dramas like this, I don’t think you’re supposed to take the plot too seriously anyway. It’s more about entertainment and vibes than tight storytelling.
Also, can we talk about the second female lead / villain? So. Freaking. Irritating. But at the same time, that’s pretty common in many C-dramas, so I guess she did her job well.
Even now, after a few years and with my tastes having changed, I still like it. Logically, I’d call it an okay drama. But emotionally? Because it was my first experience and because of how obsessed I was back then, I can’t help giving it extra points. I was satisfied with the ending, and it still has a special place in my heart.
