We could look at it as in improvement though - in an extremely homophobic society, we wouldn't see any depictions of lgbt at all.

"Bury your gays" used to be a common trope in western lgbt media too. It's good way to measure how homophobic a society is.

I know, that's what I wrote in my first comment.
In the second comment I tried to answer the "why" question - maybe the creators of the series originally wanted to stick to the first ending, but due to fan pressure they decided to make a second season where the alternative ending happened instead.
