The chemistry may have been on fire, but are we really going to ignore how foolishly written the FL was in the military setting? Some of her actions genuinely bordered on conduct that would’ve led to serious military punishment if she weren’t the FL with plot armor protecting her every move.I respect her for being fearless, strong-minded, and unapologetically “girlboss" but there’s a difference between being bold and constantly defying military strategies without consequences. At times, it felt less like intelligence or bravery and more like the writers bending logic of her being Marquis' wife.
And even if she unknowingly took certain steps because she didn’t know her husband was a Marquis, that still doesn’t erase how reckless some of those decisions were within the context of the military hierarchy.

And honestly? I probably did enjoy it a lot more because of the era and the mindset I was in at the time. The whole “your celebrity neighbors secretly move in next door and chaos unfolds” plot was exactly the kind of fantasy every fangirl secretly loved back then. It was cheesy, unrealistic, awkward at times and entirely built on fanservice but that was also the charm of it.
Looking back now, the acting, plot and overall writing definitely feel very Wattpad coded but I can’t even fully hate on it because it perfectly captured that 2015 fangirl experience. It felt less like a proper drama and more like someone took an EXO fanfic straight off the internet and turned it into a series.
And as a new EXO-L at the time? Of course I ate it up. Seeing the members casually appear on screen every episode was enough to keep me seated regardless of how unserious the plot became.
Would present-day me call it cinematic excellence? Absolutely not. But younger me was having the time of her life and honestly, that nostalgia alone makes this drama weirdly memorable.

Park Ji Hoon, Oh My God.
At this point, I’m convinced I’ll watch literally anything this man acts in because oh my god, the acting in this absolutely destroyed me.The movie itself may not have been perfectly made. There were definitely certain depths and emotional layers that could’ve been explored more and honestly, I even feel like this story might’ve worked better as a mini-series to fully flesh everything out. I especially wish we had gotten more relationship development (a little more emotional bonding without it being rushed) between Heung Do and the deposed King because I feel like that would’ve helped viewers understand the emotional weight of the story even more deeply and made the impact hit harder toward the end.
But despite those flaws, the performances were so phenomenal that I was completely moved from start to finish. It’s actually such a simple story on paper, yet the way the emotions were portrayed made everything hit ten times harder. You could genuinely feel every ounce of pain, grief, helplessness and humanity through the acting alone.
And the eye acting by Park Ji Hoon? Phenomenal as always. He conveys so much emotion without even needing dialogue sometimes. Even Yoo Hai Jin really stood out to me; his performance genuinely had me in tears. The emotional delivery from both of them carried so much of the film’s impact.
And then came the realization that this was based on real historical events. Holy. Hell.
I already found myself emotional while watching but learning that real people actually lived through this made the ending hit me like a truck. I cried so much harder afterward because suddenly it stopped feeling like “just a movie.” There’s something deeply haunting about knowing that the suffering, emotions and tragedies shown on screen were rooted in reality.
This is one of those films where the acting completely elevates the experience beyond its flaws. Even if the storytelling wasn’t perfect, the performances made sure the emotions stayed with me long after the credits rolled.

The characters had enough charm to keep me invested without making me emotionally exhausted. It had this warmth to it that made binge-watching feel relaxing rather than stressful.
Looking back now, I think part of my attachment to this drama also comes from the memories associated with it. It reminds me of late-night binge sessions, trying to make lockdown days feel shorter.

What I loved most was the underlying theme of healing. It wasn’t about being “saved” by someone else or depending on another person to succeed. Instead, it focused on growth, self-discovery and learning how to move forward while still carrying your anxiety hidden underneath. And I think that’s what made it feel so real and comforting.

an adrenaline rush disguised as a Cdrama + the BGM alone deserves an award
Just when I thought I had finally grasped the plot, the writers would throw in another twist and completely change the trajectory of the story. It genuinely blew my mind how they managed to fit in so many arcs while still keeping everything engaging instead of messy. The pacing is extremely fast but somehow it works perfectly with the intense, high-stakes aura the drama was going for. There’s barely any breathing room, yet it never felt dragging to me.
Also, the BGM during the fight and tense scenes? Absolutely incredible. It added so much weight and adrenaline to the overall experience.
But beyond the action and twists, what really stayed with me was the chemistry and trust between the leads, the sibling bond between the sisters and the costumes. The drama just had this grand, emotionally charged atmosphere that made it so easy to stay invested.

everyone should watch this.
I may have come out of this drama appreciating my parents far more than I did before watching it. There was not a single episode where I didn’t cry. What stayed with me the most was the generational shift between the mothers and daughters. A mother who refused to let her daughter join the sea because she didn’t want her to suffer the same hardships, only for that daughter to later refuse to keep her own daughter confined to the kitchen and instead help her fly towards a completely different life. That progression hit me deeply.
And I’ll be honest that there were moments where I found Geum Myeong frustrating, especially during the arguments with Ae-Sun (her mother). But then it hit me: “Oh… I’m just like her.” That realization humbled me so fast. It made me rethink all the moments where I may have unintentionally hurt my parents without ever stopping to understand the weight they carried to become the people they are today.
