I also like Hu Fei a lot, but pairing him with Yuan Ziyi is like nope. Making her the agent of his growth is double nope, cuz it's just ridiculous - who's the ML of this book again? Jin Yong could have made him like Cheng Lingsu and given them some happy times before she died or something, but he didn't either (anyway Lingsu wasn't a looker, and Hu Fei was young and clearly had the hots for a nicer-looking girl, so that was just how it went).

Lmao, right? It's just so silly. Or maybe the scriptwriter wanted to make Miao Renfeng like a tragic hero - he wasn't able to love but he tried! Let him have his daughter! *rolls eyes* And I'm not saying it wasn't Miao Renfeng's fault, the three of them all had their respective parts to play in the breakdown of the relationship so let's not "upgrade" that and make any of them do it for true lurve. Honestly why adapt if they're going to make this kind of changes? Might as well just film a new drama.
I think Zhao Banshan might still come out in some fashion, but it's clear his influence on Hu Fei's growth is gone. The drama has gone with Yuan Ziyi helping Hu Fei mature, which just makes me puke. But why should she want to live a humble life for a man she doesn't love? Did he give up his lifestyle for her? Why should she not be allowed to fail and reap the consequences of her "shallow" personality? Why is there a need to whitewash her so that she supposedly finds true love with Tian Guinong, who also seems to love her now that there is no treasure involved? Is this to "get with the times", or just because the production couldn't get the rights to Snowy Mountain so they had to write out the treasure hunt?
Her messed up relationship with Miao Renfeng and Tian Guinong is there for all to see. She knew the consequences of her actions, as "one-dimensional" as you think she might be.
I wouldn't go so far as to say this version "gives the Qing dynasty the finger", that would be giving this production too much credit. They shaft people like Zhao Banshan, so crucial to Hu Fei's development, and gave Miao Renfeng extra screentime for him to show off being cool.

Re the non-Qing hairstyle - sure, if the character is mostly 關外 and has very little to no contact with anyone remotely related to the imperial court. but Miao Renfeng in this drama is fairly open about his anti-Qing tendencies. He's highly skilled, but that doesn't mean he can go about flaunting it with a non-Qing hairstyle. Anyway just one of the things that really takes me out of the character, but they already elevated him into double ML status with Hu Fei, which is also pretty silly.

Right? In the novel, they were both flawed characters who just were not compatible and not fated to be. Neither of them had what the other wanted, and so she sought refuge with someone who she thought could give her what she needed. That was just how it was and both of them faced the consequences of their actions, there was no need to whitewash that.
Now the drama is just tying itself into knots trying to make it sound more "reasonable" - but by making him to be more perfect, it makes her choice even more illogical.
