I didn't wish for any more Amazons, but at least it's only a movie (after the disappointment of s2 I don't think I could stomach the time investment of an entire 3rd season).
Anyone know the name of the actor who plays Pong's older brother? I just realized watching the MV on YouTube that he actually sings the theme song to the show!
Huh... so "lakorn" isn't just synonymous with "thai drama"? I didn't know that either. Does a show have to have…
Thanks for the link Ceki, that was helpful. I guess I've never actually watched a proper lakorn then, only series. But it doesn't seem like I'd really enjoy lakorns anyway so it's probably for the best.
First five of these aren't even lakorns, they are series.
Huh... so "lakorn" isn't just synonymous with "thai drama"? I didn't know that either. Does a show have to have specific elements to be a lakorn, or is it related to the format (TV vs. web)?
While I'm not new to dramas in general (an understatement), I'm very new to Thai dramas and my introduction was similar to Ifrah's below. My first Thai show was actually a web drama called Gay OK Bangkok (not BL, but rather about a group of gay men) which showed me that Thai shows were not necessarily the over-the-top experience I was fearing. From there I went headfirst into the BL end of the pool, starting with the fun-but-definitely-flawed likes of Make It Right, Puppy Honey, and Love Sick, and branching out into non-BL stories if I saw familiar actors in the casts. Eventually I got to SOTUS earlier this year and it's now one of only a few series on my list that I rated a 10.
P.S. I think I will at least check out 2 Spirits' Love based on the recommendation above.
I usually don't make it that far into Chinese dramas but this one is a lot of fun! The story is kind of "everything but the kitchen sink" (magic, time travel, vampires, werewolves) ...but it's so ridiculous that it works somehow. The heroine Ye Yin traveling through time on her assignments breaks it up into 3-4 episode chunks, so I didn't really have a chance to get bored with any one era's story or setting (tbh I think this was a big factor in keeping my interest). Yet through the changing backdrops Ye Yin and Ya Long stay the same, though interestingly they are experiencing their relationship in somewhat different orders-- Ya Long in chronological order (as an immortal vampire, he can wait around for her to reappear in the timeline) and Ye Yin in the order in which she completes her time-travel assignments.
Re: Ya Long: This show is giving me Second Lead Syndrome, which I almost never get. It's not that I'm particularly fond of vampires or vampire stories (they're not that inherently interesting to me anymore) but Ya Long is just the more interesting of the male leads. And not only are we spending more time with Ya Long, he's remained a consistent character (unlike Master Si Yin and his various previous incarnations), and Ye Yin's interactions with him are just more fun to watch. So... I'm sure some disappointment is inevitable with s2 when she almost certainly ends up with Si Yin. (I didn't mark this as a spoiler b/c it's just my guess but c'mon folks, unless you're totally new to dramas it seems pretty obvious. I'd love to be wrong, though!)
I don't watch much K-drama anymore but the ones I *have* seen-- Coffee Prince, Boys Over Flowers, City Hunter, Descendants of the Sun, and Matching! Boys Archery-- are spot-on (I too am bitter about M!BA, which focused more on the delusional BL than the *actual* BL of the story).
I gotta admit, when I watch this I'm gonna be comparing it to Strawberry Night, whether I want to or not (I know, they're not necessarily that comparable besides both being mysteries, but I can't help it with Takeuchi Yuko's presence).
I'm so over the gender bender trope mainly b/c I'd rather just see an *actual* m/m couple featured (as opposed to having it be a disguise/misunderstanding that's ultimately resolved, to the male lead's inevitable relief b/c *phew* he's not actually attracted to another guy after all).
I went into this thinking I wouldn't like this installment of the series at all but I was actually pleasantly surprised. I was dreading it b/c I feared Aurora was a "snotty rich girl"-type and I generally don't like characters like that b/c I don't relate to them. But she turned out to be actually very sympathetic. And I also related to Hawk's understated exasperation of what she (and as an extension, *he*) had to put up with b/c of her celebrity status.
[I won't lie though, it might have gotten a *slight* extra bump in my esteem b/c it follows The Absolute Economist, the heroine of which I could *not* relate to (I genuinely disliked her even)-- so perhaps almost anything would've felt like a step up after that ordeal.]
His character in Water Boyy The Series is kind of obnoxious (but I liked him anyway) and I'm looking forward to seeing him in the Fabulous 30 drama adaptation in his first leading role.
I really dislike the female lead in this. Thinking she's going to "fix" Teddy into being straight *puke* I mean yes, he's not really gay, b/c this is U-Prince and I have no doubts that all the main couples (M/F) will end up together. But misunderstanding as it may be, her entitled attitude towards him (and being so dismissive of what she thinks is his current relationship, with Pascal) is incredibly sh*tty. I would skip this one if not for the presence of New, and even then it's gonna be tough.
T-Rex is freakin' ADORABLE. Not sure yet if he'll be my overall favorite U-Prince male lead (let's face it, he's pretty child-like-- so as adorable as he is, he may not be the most relatable male lead they'll offer), but so far (out of the first 3 U-Prince installments, including The Handsome Cowboy [who can honestly f**k off] and The Gentle Vet) , he's my favorite. I honestly can't believe the actor is 27. I'll make a point to keep an eye out for him in other dramas, if nothing else.
I'm both super-excited about SOTUS S but also super-nervous because of all the ways they could mess it up (and the ending of the original series was just fine and totally satisfactory). Mio below mentioned Puppy Honey 2 and yeah that's *exactly* what I don't want to see happen to SOTUS.
I'll keep it short, I decided to watch this series after watching U-Prince The Series: The Lovely Geologist…
Your advice seems directed squarely at me since I too am trying to watch U-Prince chronologically... or rather, I *was*, since with all these comments I've just read I think I'll follow your advice and just skip ahead to the next guy.
