because he's a moron. his wife wants to divorce him literally because he's so stupid, the episode begins with him getting scammed out of his money which is why he ends up desperately needing money in the first place. then everything he does afterwards proves how intellectually deficient he is and most likely is supposed to be.

Isn't this every fiction ever tho? I don't know of any movie, based on real events or not, that wouldn't dramatize events to achieve emotional reaction in the audience. If anything, movies based on tragic real events are most "guilty" of it(ex: every film about holocaust). This drama wasn't based directly on any real events, but was heavily inspired by two similar cases that happened in 2014, same year this drama takes place in.
