The moral of the story was not bad: You will only know a person's true colors when you go with him through thick and thin. That's why one also shouldn't jump into marriage too early but take your time to get to know the person. The last sentence doesn't have anything to do with the drama. This is only my own thought I wanted to add.
But the execution was really really bad. The balance was totally off. The focus on the Tian Ying and Xing Cheng couple was too strong. In the first half of the drama Tian Ying and Luo Fu Sheng had not even 5 minutes of screen time in an episode together for most of the episodes. Then Tian Ying kept Xing Cheng in her heart for too long. It's fine that she didn't fall for Luo Fu Sheng immediately because that would have made her too fickle. But it took forever for her to finally have feelings for Luo Fu Sheng. The process was way too long. So here again the balance was off.
And then the characters were totally one dimensional and uninteresting. I practically hated everyone besides Luo Fu Sheng. But even he got on my nerves at some point. Tian Ying was too naive. Xing Cheng was too good and then too bad after his 180 degree turn. And Luo Fu Sheng was too self-sacrificing. The characters didn't feel real.
But the acting was really good or even outstanding (Zhu Yi Long). I also really liked one of the songs. And the interactions between Tian Ying and Luo Fu Sheng in the later half of the drama. But that unfortunately couldn't save the drama.

I finally watched this drama and am really disappointed. The drama was a complete mess. Illogical, predictable and boring story with bland characters. I only skipped through it for Zhu Yi Long. Otherwise I would just have dropped it. No matter how good an actor still needs to get a good role to be able to shine. I'm happy Zhu Yi Long finally got that chance with Guardian because he is such an amazing actor. Maybe even one of the best Chinese actors I've ever seen! And it's such a shame that he was totally underrated for such a long time. I hope he will be offered better roles in the future after Guardian's success. Can't wait to see him in a good drama again.
I doubt this is true. There are all the time rumors about Cdramas with popular actors and they always turn out to be false. Don't believe some random videos on Youtube.
I hate Chinese censorship so much. Just rewatched a few episodes and again I'm really hating them for not allowing this amazing chemistry to come to fruits. What a waste. They had such sizzling chemistry only with looking at each other already. How I wished they would go to another country and film a real BL version with the same cast. Bai Yu and Zhu Yi Long make such a perfect on-screen couple.
China is really harming their drama industry with this censorship thing. Cdramas would probably long have been more popular than Kdramas if they had full freedom of expression. Every time a drama is doing really well they censor something about it. Such a pity.
Nice article! I was already in a few short relationships but I'm not sure if I already met my real first love. I might think back at one or another beautiful moment when I feel lonely but that's probably just because I feel lonely. I think I haven't met that person I will never forget yet.
Talking about dramas I need to say that China makes the best dramas about first love. If you are looking for dramas that are close to reality that is. I'm not talking about the fluffy fairytale like type now. Chinese youth dramas are pure gold! I just finished Suddenly This Summer which was really awesome. And there are many more. They feel very real. I can't talk about Japanese dramas because I don't watch them but my feeling is that Korean dramas always need some suspense element or the like even in slice of life dramas. I feel they don't dare to just portray normal everyday life. Korean dramas are awesome as well but when it comes to slice of life they can't compare to Chinese dramas imo.
This drama was amazing! Everyone should watch this. China is simply the best when it comes to realistic stories about youth and young love that will really touch you.
Holy sh*it that making out scene at the end of episode 13 was definitely one of the best I've ever seen in Kdramaland. The chemistry between the leads is out of this world!

Extremely well said Lyn! I really enjoyed reading your long comment. These are exactly my thoughts. And the part about why would people even watch when they hate the actor is so true. If you don't like him then go watch something else and stop hating on him here. I know everyone has different opinions but people here really go too far. It's so infuriating to read all that hate comments how he is not suitable, ugly, fat, too old and whatever when he is such a talented and charming actor.
Ending is a bit different from the book, but still a decent drama.

Because if it's like that they made a totally different story rather than an adaptation. I'm really enjoying this drama but I was looking forward to see a quiet female lead who is not bad at studying for once.
