Underwhelming with No Emotional Investment
Not worth the watch. This is the 3rd drama that I've attempted to watch with Meng Zi Yi as the FL. She's gorgeous but her acting is mediocre and borderline terrible. The other two dramas (Blossoms of Power, and Royal Rumors) I dropped within the first 5 episodes, they were unwatchable. Princess Gambit I decided to try to finish, it was a chore with lots of skipping. Not one character provided any emotional investment for the viewer - I couldn't care whether anyone lived or died.
The Good (not much):
- costumes were beautiful
The Bad:
- Lead couple had zero chemistry, it's like they just existed next to each other in the scenes
- Villains were ridiculous with no credible backstory to explain their actions
- Low budget - when the Emperor, the Evil Queen any of the military attacks...their army was literally 12 soldiers on screen, it was laughable
- Odd camera angles - too many close up angles of their faces from above their head, zooming down to show half their face
- So many plot holes that insults the viewers intelligence. FL Princess with zero fighting skills somehow keeps surviving...fall down a cliff, not a small cliff, a HUGE mountain range, being poisoned which requires monthly pill to suppress it - but the flare ups only happen whenever it's conveniently to move the next scene forward, tortured in prison but walks away with a few cuts and is fine within days, and the stupidest of all a scene with explosions and everyone walking away looking battered, dirty including the male lead, yet the Princess walks away looking flawless - next scene she changes her outfit & hairstyle - where did that bright colorful clean outfit and new gold hair accessories appear from in the midst of a major battle when the town was literally on fire with dead bodies everywhere.
It was just all pretty bad. Don't waste your time.
